War on the Sea

I dropped by to see what the community was saying about Killerfish Games’ new title, War on the Sea, and was surprised that there doesn’t seem to be a forum for it. Is there a reason for that, or is it still relatively unknown?

I’ve been getting some real enjoyment out of it after I decided to give it a shot. I’m using the Tokyo Express mod, which adds a lot of ships and aircraft that are missing in the stock game. It simultaneously reminds me a little of War in the Pacific (lite) with splashes of Great Naval Battles and my childhood favorite on SNES, PTO II. Anyway, if you haven’t heard of this game yet, take a look. There’s even some pretty fun sub action, along the lines of Cold Waters, and I’ve really enjoyed the ASW role of my DDs, too!

Although there’s no sub action in it, this video depicts the most immersive and enjoyable engagement I’ve had in my current campaign:

WOS is a beautiful and very detailed RTS wargame . But when playing RTS games like this I never feel like part of the action, like I do in the fIrst-person (optional 3rd person) sims like SH series. RTS Games limited to 3rd person or top down birds eye views feel detached, movie-like, and lack fog of war. The “suspense” never builds In these games for me.

Looks pretty good.

Some questions concerning that video

1. It appeared that the US player had access to a lot of precise information about the Japanese ships. Are there inaccuracies (fog of war) implemented?

2. Do the ships have a realistic munition load? It seemed that there was a lot of shooting from long range with low solutions. There was a finite number of shells on board and one did not want to use all of them in one battle. Conserving resources was important.

3. I wonder why the player chose to engage the last merchant from such a long distance. It seemed like a lot of firepower used to sink what seemed to be an unarmed merchant.

4. Maybe it was just the changing camera, but it appeared that there were instances where ships were firing at long range during a turn. I don't think that would have happened too often as it would wreck the solution and waste shells.

This game has come along way from last year!:Kaleun_Salute: They've made a lot of improvements and added a bunch of stuff. I'm still playing the vanilla version, just with the updates. It would be cool though, if you could build PT-boats though.

I'm replaying the Japanese campaign and have I had some wild carrier battles!

I do wish the AI had to play by the same rules and it's fleet had to leave it's main base? It seems like it still as spawn point and groups, with whatever is available in your ship pool.

This could really use it's own thread.
