The time is ripe to upgrade to 7

Nearly three years after the debut of the botched Windows Vista, enough is right with Windows 7 to unseat an aging Windows XP

Bottom line: Windows XP remains the Gold Standard for application compatibility, a fact Microsoft has fully embraced with Windows 7. Customers can expect a better compatibility experience with the new Windows, and when they do encounter an application that refuses to behave under the native runtime, they can always fall back to Virtual Windows XP Mode.

Yeah, I am getting that one. XP has served me well.

What is cool about this and after I read to the end, XP mode. There are plenty of games that just will not play in Vista or 7 but run great in XP. I remember XP could run in 98 mode. It work well for Mech Warrior 3 for me.

Xp mode is just a virtual machine; ain't gonna run any games afaik.

Couldn't even get an SDK that required DX9 card to run. :nope:

Or can you use the actual graphicscard (instead of virtual)? :hmmm:

AVGWarhawk 07-30-09 11:15 AM

I'm guessing using the card. I do recall that XP would mode 98 and I could play 98 games without issue. I would suspect it would be the same for 7.

From what I'm reading, 3D gaming is not really supported. Sure you can run Age of Empires, but don't expect more than that. Like I mentioned, I couldn't even get a 3D editor to run. :hmmm:

If you look in the device manager, you'll find only virtual parts. XP mode uses "Virtual PC Integration Components S3 Trio32/64" for graphics, at least in the beta build I'm running.

You can assign more memory to the VM, possibility to emulate multiple HDs (they are basically images stored on the physical machine's HDs), assign physical DVD-drive to be used, etc.

It's aimed at corporate use, not home users. It's included from "Pro" edition up.

I run dual boot XP\Vista64

On XP I play : cfts3, Ms 2004, and a few others that were made in 98 era and play excellent on XP.

If W7 can do everything I can do now without XP that will be GREAT.

Time will tell before I runout and get W7.

You can run SH1 on XP with out a partition

I like backward function standard.

kiwi_2005 08-01-09 05:18 AM

I'll be staying with XP until the day comes along where a game wont run cause my OS is too old. I like 7 but no reason for me to change over yet.

Zachstar 08-01-09 03:03 PM

There will be 2 windows 7s running in this house after the Beta time passes next year.

I will purchase a full Home premium version and the parents will purchase an upgrade for their Vista computer that has been plagued with vista related issues.

Arclight 08-01-09 03:06 PM

Yep, will be buying by the time RC runs out. Still allows some time for first impressions on final release. If it's botched, back to XP instead.

Zachstar 08-01-09 07:08 PM

Indeed Microsoft is a genius with that generous extended RC time. As by then we will be so used to windows 7 that it will be extremely difficult to go back to XP.

The price is way too steep but we will pay.

FIREWALL 08-01-09 08:02 PM

Why is the concept of useing a partition and running XP and Win7 on the same computer so hard for some to grasp ?

Vista\Win7 for DX10 and up games

XP for DX9 and older games.

A no brainer.

If you have a 40gb hdd, spend the money on a bigger hdd.

Not on a glitzier OS.

Arclight 08-01-09 11:08 PM

Problem is temporarily relocating 500+GB data to repartition the drive. ;)

Reece 08-01-09 11:28 PM

Interesting to hear that Google is working on a new GUI similar to windows, this'll give Microsoft a swift kick in the butt!!:yeah: Nothing like a bit of competition!:yep:
