Uboat No Time Compression Log

March 3, 1942

Currently on day 6 of 15 of a real time crossing from La Rochelle to Aruba. Daily dive tests, I am a terribly irresponsible Kaleun with drills as deep as 270 m and waiting to first leak, wasting repair parts mid Atlantic. Can't let no mold grow anyway.

Just passed the Azores tonight. No contacts over duration of voyage. Morale is high and the men still have the taste of shore leave around Bordeaux.

Grammophone and radio from The Wolves of Steel at least for some entertainment, or to drown out the sound of Frensen's furz.

The passage of a day in real life out in the world against life in the boat, and having control of both, is an interesting juxtaposition. Life aboard is busy at any rate.

Awful long way to go for a port attack.

Curious thing about playing to many video games and doing this, only checking on the boat quickly a few times a day. Not spending any full night's playing. It will be a long playtime 10 km out from Aruba. Will have to time arrival for when I'm home from work Monday a week from now.

Happy Hunting Kapitänleutnants.

Half-way day

7 March, 1942
DF-1269

Today marked half-way day on the journey to Aruba. I ordered the distribution of a half-bottle of beer each for the crew.

34 days at full ration remain, with enough fuel for the return journey should no resupply be possible. The bread has just started to mold. Comforting to know that something will grow here.

The men remain receptive to drills, and dive time has decreased from over one minute to 35 seconds.

Minor emergency onboard at 30 metres during hydrophone check when Oberstabsgefreiter Conrad Otto, assigned to U-564 by special favor to some relation in the brass, after introducing compressed air to the waste reservoir, opened the upstream valve, reintroducing the waste to him. Gilbert Chesterton wroe, "The greenhorn is the ultimate victor in everything; it is he that gets the most out of life." The chief has been assigned daily training with the men to ensure their knowledge of common systems is second to none.

No contacts on this leg of journey. Lili Marleen is in everyone's heads.
