plz recommend sims
Hi everyone,
First off, this appears to be a great site and I just wish I could have found you guys many years ago. Like many of you I am fascinated with submarines and the strategy of Naval warfare and I would love to get into the submarine simulator scene but my problem is not knowing where to begin By that I mean, I could buy Silent Hunter 4 and get stuck in but I would rather start with maybe an older sim and progress so I can learn to appreciate advances inline with my own learning curve. I personally would lean towards less graphical and more strategy games using my imagination to fill in the gaps. So if anyone has any recommendations I would really appreciate it. Another consideration would be my computer is not top of the range so may struggle to handle Silent Hunter 4, for example. Thanks Captain Mackey |
Hi Mackey Welcome Aboard
I have Silent Hunter 2. It's always available on ebay and I think thru SubSim which helps SS with no extra cost to you. It comes in cd form btw and will play fine on XP. It doe's on mine anyways. Might as well pickup SH3 WHILE YOUR AT IT. :D :D :D Good luck and keep us posted . :yep: |
Sims
I would recommend you purchase the NCP available at the subsim store, and DW. In NCP you get Fleet Command, 688i, and Sub Command, all great older Sims and your computer would handle them all. With Sub Command and DW you would want to download the SCX IIc and the LAMI mods-great additions to the Sims.

Cough, cough! Command:Aces of the Deep and Silent Hunter Commander's Edition. You can't beat the pair for atmosphere, compatibility or available addons (scenarios, utilities, etc)

Silent Hunter III
Dangerous Waters The Naval Combat Pack (Old games but good ones), Fighting Steel You can get these games right here in the Subsim Store http://www.subsim.com/store.html Harpoon Comander's Edition http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=325 or Harpoon 3 Advanced Naval Warfare http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=325 (If you want a simpler interface, go with Comander's Edition) War Plan Orange http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=326 Pacific War: Matrix Edition: A free, updated old game from way back in the dos days but it's still a fantastic game. I play it every once in a while. http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=235 Distant Guns (Storm Eagle Studios) or the Distant Guns: Jutland that they are coming out with (These are WWI naval action). http://www.stormeaglestudios.com/public/home.html Global Conflict Blue (It's free and pretty damn good) http://gcblue.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page |
Thanks for all the advice!
I'll post an update on what I get and how I get on with it very soon. Mackey |
UPDATE:
Well I have SH3 installed now and out of the Naval Combat Pack I have installed Sub Command. I figure learning two subsims at once is plenty and they both have very different feels but both satisfy my subby needs. (that last sentence really doesn’t read well :hmm: ) I have some issues regarding using my laptop touchpad with with Sub Command but I’ll address this in another thread. I had an initial problem with RAM on my laptop but the game is now playable with 1GB RAM. Sadly my laptop is an older model and only has 1 memory slot. So anyone want a 256mb module pm me, I can see you all rushing towards me now ! Then I updated the integrated graphics driver and that stopped it working all together! So I went back to the original driver and it works perfectly. I’m using FSautostart and no problems in that department, I know my frame rate is very low (maybe 10 fps for SH3) but everything responds and I’m not looking for graphical realism as I have a good imagination. I can’t expect too much from a 1.3 Ghz Laptop after all. I play Sub Command quite happily on my work PC and that’s ancient at 698Mhz with 512 MB Ram :D At the moment all the game related questions I have are stupid and obviously due to inexperience so I wont even bother you guys until I’m really stuck however I’ll let you all in on my first 2 bad experiences. I managed to destroy my sub before I even left the port in SH3, I didn’t expect there to be a maze out of the port! During the tutorial I was happily playing with the flak gun until I ran out of ammo and I only realised that after firing a few star shells at the ships. I was trying to blind the ships captain into surrendering. :sunny: I’ve played the escorting tanker mission in Sub Command twice and both times the kilo’s have launched torps before I could destroy them and I cant seem to get to them any faster…but that mystery will evolve in time I’m sure. :hmm: Soon I’ll be modding and patching, I can’t wait. Having a forum like this certainly makes the whole submarine experience a much more rewarding one. Mackey |
