Victory Games Fleet series

I've always been interested in the Fleet series of war games published by Victory Games, designed by Joseph M. Balkoski. Just recently I was able to setup an old computer game based on these rules, Avalon Hill's "5th Fleet." Old DOS game published in 1994, I was able to use DOSbox to get the game running on my old Toshiba Win7 laptop. :yeah:

The screenshots look cool! They have a certain retro charm that dont look outdated, but stylized.

I still own 2nd and 6th Fleet. Was good to play alone, but I shelved it when I found Tokyo Express, which excelled in delivering solitary playing, which it was made for by design.

Also a fan of the Third World War and Assault series by GDW, I also played Gulf Strike and Flight Leader.

I wish that somebody would have converted Flight Leader into a PC cosim. If I were a coder, I would do that game, most likely. But lastr time I did code, it was in GFA Basic 3.0 - on Amiga. :)

Ambush! was a good solitary WWII game, too.

I enjoy a lot of those old hex & counter games you mentioned. They did make a DOS game of Gulf Strike in 1985. Maybe a bit primitive nowadays.

Hehe, oh look, Neal still has it set up - I wrote this twelve years ago! :)

Twelve years. Man, time is fleeting, and young men turn into old men... Now I feel depressed...

For a coder, this game probably would be fun to make, since the AI mechanism is already set up and must not be much thought about.

Well I am back at the Fleet series. I purchased 2nd Fleet, 6th Fleet and 7th Fleet in varying conditions. They can get very expensive the better the condition. I am having to clean up the basement though so I can setup a table for the maps.

One thing trying to learn Command Modern Operations is that these games don't seem as nearly as complex to me as before :haha: I was pretty intimidated. Also I had to get into reading about modern weapon systems, big leap from WW2 technology.

Too bad I have not the space anymore to have a table set up for days to play these games on their huge maps. It were good days back then...

There are ways to play them on the computer. Some of the maps have been scanned but several of the maps have been made by fans which I don't find attractive. For some reason I have to have copies of the original maps. I hope to get over to a place to scan the maps I have.

I just recently put together a module to play SPI Sinai on the computer
