Re: Putting SH4, on a diet...

Been thinking on this subject... & am really... interested, in knowing...

Is it possible to put SH (stock, to begin with...) on a diet, of non needed files & folders... to facilitate the feasibility of being able to use say... mods that improve the interiors better, additional ships, (better designed with better damage models, different skins... NOT to fail to mention, ensuring that the ships in it, as well as add on ships mods, have factual, actual used ships included in the rosters & convoy's) & the improvement of Wilhelmshaven, Lorient (namely, proper base locations) & other bases used by the Uboats during the war, that had dock locks such as Wilhelmshaven did.

This last part with regards to Wilhelmshaven/Lorient, is more geared to the Uboat mod sets... but, would also hold true for.. say SubRon 50 & We dive at Dawn, if you go with a non Med career... :hmmm:

Am thinking, that 1 area to start would be with the single missions section... & the museum (2ndly).. to begin with... & any other stuff NOT deemed needed for SH3 to run.

Thoughts... idea's... suggestions... :hmmm:

this is something that i have thought about also.
i "think" one should be able to edit a couple of config files such that the number of files present in the folder system will be reduced.
for example, if one is using MultiSH4 to create a separate game environment for FOTRSU, they probably do not need any file relating to the German side of things, so, theoretically, one could eliminate the loading of those files by editing the cfg file(s) and thereby lower the memory load.
unless i am missing what you are saying......

We tried some Keto dieting in FotRSU, and did have some success with removing certain files, but we did not get far with it. It is an arduous task at best to track down what can and cannot be removed, or what is used by the game, and what isn't. "Time" (and CapnScurvy) told us to chase other rabbits... lol - "testing" changes of that type are nigh-on impossible in one human lifetime...

Ok, how many of us (subsimmer's...) actually dink about with Single missions... much less the Museum... really... really mess with going into that segment of the sim/game.?

I know that I don't & am willing to be, that there's a lot that don't either.

For those that do... fine... set the needed verbotten garbage, into a separate add on mod folder... & let them set up a stand alone SH4 set up for that, or can leave it in their mix.

As I know of, recall a lot of back & forth posts... about the horrors of crashes/corrupted game saves, because of the museum... & on the subject of single missions... can't say on that score. Soo.... that is files & such, that's taking up space. Follow...

Then, there is the question... with, for example... a U.S. skipper career... what's the use of & point of having, playable Uboats... sound & text that are for use if you are tooling about in a Kaleun career.... when you're a Fleetboat skipper from the U.S. ??? :hmmm:

On that, leads Me to wonder... on the flip side, if that isn't contributing to issues with the Uboat side of things... getting orders to do a patrol, where a U.S. sub would be called for to do... getting equipment that is for a U.S fleetboat... can recall a issue with a Type 7, getting a load out of Mk XIV torps... :o :timeout: when T-I, T-II, T-III's would be the standard for a Uboat... NOT Mk XIV's.

All of that, am thinking, should be stuff that is able to be culled from stock SH4... & can be then added in, per which side you want to roll with here.. say, for instance... Fleetboat skipper... you add into the jsgme, a mod folder that has nothing but what is needed for a playable U.S. skipper... 1 stock SH4 install... & bam...

Think pnp (plug-n-play) capability... :hmmm: SH4 style...

All the info you need, is in that MODS folder... just for that career... then...

wanna tool about in a Uboat career... pull the MODS folder, for the U.S career, stick it in your SH4-MOD career backup folder... drop in the Uboat MOD set & as quick as Bob's your unkle.... you're good to go... which with that, would also work with... doing a Brit sub skipper career, also... & when the IJN mod set comes out... if that ever does, could also apply to that set, too.

This would also, apply to your save folders... as well... Can do a folder to save your career save folders, then pull out the 1 you want to roll with... & bam... all set to pick up, where you left off... & as quick as Bob's your unkle.... you're good to go...

Look at the menu_1024_768.ini file sometime, and in SH4, there are sections devoted to SH3. My guess is since the game loads everything in the game folder, that it is difficult to part company with a file named in the menu_1024_768.ini file, and editing that is a bit tough, even if you use the SH5 editor. Kind of like a house of cards, in that one section holds up and supports the next. Speaking of which, the SH5 version of the menu_1024_768.ini has SH3 "calls" also, along with SH4 leftovers... There is a reason, whatever it is, that they left those there. One thing to notice is that the US Fleetboat bears a striking resemblance to a Type IXD2... There's a reason these game companies went to the DVD-R format instead of 1.44mb floppies... :har:
