Help! Multiplayer problems!

SInce my Dad and I can't play SHIII together, we decided to use SHII.
How do I set up the multiplayer settings so that my dad and I can play through a router? Do i need a dedicated server such as Ubi.com's? (which wasn't working in the summer when i checked)

Can you do a direct connect crossover patch cable?
