Trying to Find a Copy of 688(i) that Will Work on Windows 7

I'm trying to find a downloadable copy of 688(i). I've found the NCP on Amazon and Steam, and I've also found a copy of just 688(i) on the Strategy First website. Will any of these versions work on Windows 7 32 bit?

Thanks.

I have a system running Windows 7 64 bit. 688(I) H/K (the Naval Combat Pack version) works perfect for me. You should be OK going that route.

So, I got it, but no sound effects actually play(weapons, voices, etc). The music is fine, but the actual effects are non-existant. Is there any work around to this issue?

Thanks.

EDIT:The sound works if I set the compatibility to Win 2000, but it crashes about 15 minutes into any session. Are there any solutions at all?

Greetings all,
I have the orginal box set and cd-rom. After reading threads from this forum, I have upgraded to patch 1.07 and before that copied the renderware *.zip files over. Now 688(I) runs okay on Windows 7 64 bit. I am looking for online players.

Win 7 woes

Just bought a copy from amazon...will install to my xp AND my win7 machines, will post results.

Nope...

Came in a few days ago, usual problems...have music, but no sfx. None of the remedies/patches seem to work, or links to the patches and updates are broken. I had an xp copy about 3 years ago that worked with no problems at all. Any word from Sonalyst on the subject?:/\\!!

I don't know, but a wild guess: is it coming from your line-out port? Some games messed it up, like "Prince of Persia, Sands of Time". Skype does too.

The one that comes with the "Naval Combat Pack" works fine with Windows 7.

I have Win7 64bit and I tried to install the naval combat pack and it does not work. And I tried and tried!....changed resolution, compatibility, etc...So I just don't know what to do to succeed anymore!

For what it is worth, 688(I) works fine for me under Windows 7 running in a VirtualBox that runs XP as its OS. You could likely get 688(i) going in a VirtualBox running Windows95/98 as well.

This also has the advantage of allowing you to have the VirtualBox as a "Window" on your Desktop. You can use the VirtualBox scale mode to size the VirtualBox window to a size you are happy with.

Note that this works for 688(I) but not Sub Command or Dangerous Waters. The reason is that 688(I) does the 3D rendering with the CPU whereas Sub Command and Dangerous Waters will attempt to make 3D driver calls and these are not supported under VirtualBox.

To all of you who are experiencing sound problems, there is a workaround (not sure if it works in Win7, but it's worth a try).

Go to SubGuru's page (http://www.subguru.com), go to downloads and get the SCSoundEdit Utility (it's under general downloads and tutorials). It works for 688(I) as well.

Once you're downloaded the file, run the scsoundedit.exe, open the sfx.agg in the 'sfx' folder that's in your 688(I) installation directory, and unpack all the sound files into the sfx directory.

The sound effects should work now. The downside is that you might experience some crackling.

Hope it helps! :ping:

EDIT: Added SCSoundEdit Utility to the Subsim Downloads section. -- NS
