Started a new career in a type II duck with the Onealex mod, even after completing the game I cannot put it down!

August 1, 1939
Entry Log: 0001
Oblt Willi Goft, U-21, type IIA

I recieved my first command, though not as powerful and beautiful as a VIIB or a VIIA, the U-21 is still a fine sub. The type IIA is smaller and weaker, but I think of this as a challenge that needs to be fought, the FdU is testing me. In due time I will get a better boat.
The FdU has given us an assigned patrol grid of AO41, and we departed today from the Weddigen Flotilla based at Kiel. The weather was nice at first but now as we transit the Kaiser-Wilhelm Canal, it has started to storm, we are only experincing obscure lightning and thunder for now. I can see a giant wall of rain ahead of us, boy am I glad to not be a 2WO anymore, I could not stand those days out in the pouring rain and in horrible weather.

Signed,
Willi Goft

By the way, Kapitan, are you using no time compression? Real-time gameplay?

FYI: In the type II boats, the Cmdr was also the I.W.O. ;-)

Yes, the max. time compression I use is x64. I'm just simulating a uboat career according to the real calendar ....

Wow! That is a game of patience!
That way you have time to see events coming! :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

Works out pretty good this way, since I have limited time due to my job.

Pretty hard-core, I would never be able to do that!

Entry Log: 0002
Oblt Willi Goft, U-21, type IIA

We have completed our first wartime patrol! We travelled mostly submerged once we made it out of the Kaiser-Wilhelm Canal and past Heligoland, we came across several merchant ships of diffrenent countries, even a few American ones! The weather was quite rough as well. The boat was being slammed around in the turbulent waters of the North Sea. I was nearly washed off of the bridge myself! Even the saltiest sailor would get terrible seasickness.
We transisted the Brunsbuttel locks at 0550 on August 2, and we reached our patrol grid by August 5. We completed our patrol and FdU ordered us back to base because our fuel and food supplies were dangerously low, we haven't sunk a ship yet but I awarded the 2WO and the LI the U-boat War Badge as the 2WO showed extreme skill and resillence in the rough waters and the LI because he had repaired the boat after we had struck shallow water in the Kaiser-Wilhelm Canal, our fuel tank was moderately damaged and we lost an estimated 6% of fuel before sealing the tank.
The FdU was neither impressed or dissatisied with my performance.
We brought on several new crew memebers after our last patrol ended.
We await new orders from FdU

Signed,
Willi Goft

Gives it real sense of realism in terms of how long this conflict actually lasted but also, how quickly time can pass: On one hand, I can't believe, it's been 1 year already since the start of the war and on the other hand, my career will not be over until May 2025!

Cajun Kaleun 09-25-20 02:32 AM

December of 42 we set out for the Caribbean yet again in hopes of enjoying the last bit of hunting for the year. It was actually a really boring transit we made it a good way through the Bay of Biscay before we encountered an aircraft and it didn't seem too eager to bother us when we dived. Picked up some warships transiting the Atlantic when we did a hydrophone check near the Azores as well.

Finally made it off the coast of the Dominican Republic again but honestly it was a really boring patrol nothing was happening and it was pretty quiet. Decided to head down to Curaçao this time instead of Florida. While steaming south we caught sight of a destroyer and luckily dived before they noticed. Eventually a really nasty storm showed up when we were right outside the port which made me nervous as I couldn't pick up any patrols around well I decided to slowly slide in and take a peak. It was a massive jackpot 3 tankers in Port and not a single destroyer to be seen. Torpedoed all 3 and headed home happy and feeling like the war was going well.

Then we had our patrol in late February of 43. Oh how quickly the tables have turned already. Shortly after leaving Lorient we encountered aircraft and it was pretty much a constant game of whack-a-mole. Eventually we found a pretty good groove of avoiding aircraft and charging batteries. Encountered a lone cargo ship while charging batteries and used the deck gun to a sink her then quickly dived and slunk away a few days later found another lone cargo ship and did the same to them as well. Needless to say other than the very noticeable increase and organization of Allied aircraft it was seeming like a great patrol and figured the transit to the Caribbean would be fairly smooth. Then suddenly the closer we got to the Azores the more we seemed to be running into trouble and it was harder to predict the aircraft patrols. Eventually we got caught out charging our batteries one morning and we took heavy damage. We took down the aircraft but I decided it was better to limp home it was not worth the risk of trying to even get to our patrol zone. 43 is looking to be a ugly turn.

On a side note I'm really stoked this is the furthest I have made it in a career before. 42 was usually where I met my demise but so far I'm alive. First time I literally couldn't justify finishing a patrol and it felt weird to return with all my eels aboard. The surfacing thing is going to be my downfall played so many nuc sims I have never given it much thought but now I really to adapt as I am prey and no longer the predator.

It does a really good job of simulating it for sure. I get why so many died not just the switch in ASW tactics but without the foreknowledge of the war it would be hard to shake the hunter mentality for a lot of skippers once the tide turned. I think I just need to set expectations low and hope for a bit of tonnage but just aim for survival.
