U-108 - Nov. 5th 1940 19:37 - Patrol 13 - South-Western Approaches

Bumped into a small tanker. 5 rounds from the DG set it ablaze. 10 more rounds later and it is still truddling along.....

You know when BDU order 1st Flotilla UBoats to carry out "a shakedown for 5 days" is that just another way of saying a standard patrol,or reconnaisance mission? In other words, preparations for war, giving the fresh crews 5 days to get accustomed to their new UBoats and life at sea.

Thanks.

A "shakedown" is simply to find - and correct - flaws in crew and equipment.....

On the 5th day of your patrol you'll receive a radio message telling you to return to base (if you'd chosen the 7th IIRC Flotilla out of Konigsberg you should return to base and imediately request a transfer to the 1st or 2nd operational flotillas).

Your 2nd patrol should commence on the 24th August (if using SH3 Commander set your days in port to 20) which allows you to travel in a neutral SH3 world to your assigned patrol grid in preparation for the commencement of hostilities....just like they did in RL.

Pohl 05-23-09 01:27 PM

U-507 was sunk in her 4th patrol, run into a Task Force convoy and between the mess above and aiming at the escorts a tanker hit us, leaving heavy hull damage and flooding.

In my cholera I decided to give the royal navy a test of the XXI u-boat, this is my new career...looks very promising :yeah:

Jim,
Just two things mate,
I presume I am not to open fire on any shipping whatsoever during this time?,and if that is the case, will any warships that sight us open fire?,would they be suspicious of a German UBoat sailing in the North Sea?.

Second, the current date is 1st Aug (as you will no doubt already know),5 days on patrol takes me to the 6th Aug,about 3 days return journey (thats if you still get renown for manually returning the UBoat) takes me to about the 9th,20 days in port takes me to 29th Aug.As Poland was invaded on the 1st Sept that gives me about 2-3 days to reach my next patrol before the seas become hostile.Would you agree this is correct?
Sorry for being naive here, but I need to ask all this as if I know nothing. This is far more complex now than the stock game, that I have been so used to,and rightly so.

Thanks!

Jim,

I set my days in port for 18,that gives us a good 5 days to get in position well in advance.I think that is correct, well ive just worked it all out on paper,so... :yeah:

I often lurk right outside ports looking for a battleship or a carrier in the middle of the night, but so far no luck or it's just that it's to early to look for those kind of ships :wah:

You are given 1000 extra renown instead of the usual 500 for the loss of renown you will incur for firing on neutral shipping during this 'working up' period.

Your 2nd patrol will automatically commence on 24th August (don't dorget the 20 days in port setting if your using SH3 Commander).

BE ADVISED....when you fire on neutral shipping during your 1st patrol, all other nationalities being neutral will view you as an enemy for a 24 hour period.

GWX has removed all renown for travelling to and remaining in your assigned patrol grid for 24 hours. The renown for returning to base has never worked ingame, be it stock or any other version.

U-108 - Nov. 9th. 1940 - 22:20 - Patrol 13

Two very strong echoes among several others arriving fast from the East. Trying to turn our stern towards them. There is our only remaining torpedo. Hood or Renown....?

So,we actually get rewarded now for attacking neutral shipping,a bonus of 1000,I never knew that :o . Do you recommend I do this?,yet I would be seen as a ruthless renegade, something I dont see myself as,I think a valiant fight against a formidable opponent/odds is more to my taste.

A long time ago when I first started playing SHIII I could have swore people said there was a 500 bonus renown for returning to base, and others also said not so.I think since then I have been a bit confused about the actual calculation process of awarding renown.

Good idea about removing renown just for reaching your patrol sector,I mean it doesnt exactly make someone famous or infamous just to reach a grid square, unlike Prien when he managed to penetrate Scapa Flow,he should have been awarded 1 000 000 renown for pulling that stunt off!

Thanks
