1st post- What computer to get?

Hello everyone, I noted that this is the place to introduce oneself. So here goes. My name is Steve (Kira96) and I originally joined subsim in 07 +- but never used the facilities, too shy I guess. Played SH III, loved the game, crashed the game when I started to use patches and mods via Game Shadow. We (the wife and I) retired the old computer then got a new one quickly, but it was not up to SH III standards.

So now I would like to revisit SH III after these yrs and need to get a "New" computer to do it. My question to the community is this: What should I get? I've followed a number of threads and there seems to be some question as to which os is best, what up to date graphic card/sound card to use that is DirectX9 compatible, and is XP the right choice now that Microsoft is dropping support?

There are some posts from guys who are running the game on Win 7 - how do they do it? I'm not a techie and I am getting someone to build a system for me (or off the shelf) as well as getting all the downloads i.e. GWX 3,SH Commander, MD5, JSGME and others. I'm learning.

So in a nut shell what system should I get that will run the game without too many hassles.

Thank you for any suggestions,
Kira96

Below are the minimum specs required to run SH5 (even less for SH3) so I would use that as a starting point.

Of course the higher the specs you can afford to purchase will mean a longer life for your computer regarding the need for fewer upgrades.

Welcome aboard:salute:
To play on W7 you need a copy of SH3 without starforce. Also XP while still good really is not advised from an IT standpoint. W7 64bit is the way to go as it is more current.

As for what system to get modern laptops can play SH3 as the integrated graphics cards have received major upgrades in the past 10 years. My macbook pro handles the major graphics mods including MEP4 without even flinching. Desktops will likely be the same way you can should be able to get one off the shelf without building it yourself and run the game (though they all have W8 on them now). I recommend getting one built for the simple reason you can make a computer that will hold up to newer games for about 4 years were as the "off shelf" will be out of date in about a year and you can put whatever OS you want on it (minus mac) without much fuss.

Hello Steve
Welcome in the wolf pack!
About Your question:
I would recommend a an intel cpu like Intel Core i3-4130 its very powerful and sips on power
For video use the new 750Ti from nvidia.
Get anywhere from 6 to 8 gb ram. Brand and speed is not important buy something with a long warranty.
Also you can squeeze all this in a box the size of a Bread box

WELCOME ABOARD! We can never have too many Steves.

I can't add anything to the advice already given. That said, my computer is now nine years old - single-core, pretty much bare bones and way out-of-date, and it runs SH3 just fine except for a couple of very large mods I'd like. Practically any modern multi-core system will run it with all the bells and whistles just fine. As has been said, what you're really looking for is enough horsepower to run the much newer games, and the ones yet to be released. Always plan ahead with a computer purchase.

Hi Kira and welcome aboard. A Win7 PC will eventually become a Win10 machine, the way MS is pushing it. One thing to consider: get a 2nd hand machine for games like SH3, a PC like the one Steve has, with WinXP, and required specs. Should be cheap, everyone usually wants to get rid of their "old" machine to get a new one. I have a couple older machines for this, including a Pentium 120 with Win95 I got at a TV repair shop for $25. Perfect for playing old games like Aces of the Deep, SSN-21 Seawolf, and Fast Attack.

Of course, you may need a newer machine to do real work on, surf the web, etc. But there's nothing wrong with owning an old game machine.

Umm, this is old news. The thread was resurrected for a birthday wish, but he hasn't posted since this one and only two years ago, nor has he looked at the forum since last December.

As for me, I'm now playing on Windows 8.1 (was 10 until I had to reformat my computer) with no problems.
