A peek in a Foxtrot
 

I just stumbled on this old TV documentary (1997 but it really feels old, especially the sound) on a Polish Foxtrot class sub.

At 10:32 there is a nice blimps of a Soviet sonar scope,another one at 18:12, followed by a close-up on the radar station.

Any ideas on the rectangular display visible at 10:48? Clearly a part of the sonar console but I have no idea on how to read that and it is quite intriguing to the Dangerous Waters Akulaveteran...

Very nice I’ve been lucky enough to go on a foxtrot in Belgium (now scrapped)

They were very noisy even for diesel boats due to the 3 screws and in the first versions there was no rafting

I knew about the three screws issue. The story of the four Foxtrots sent to Cuba in 1962 is pretty dismal too, still, they served faithfully...


Can I renew my question about the sonar console? I am very curious about this old kit.

The Sonar on the foxtrot as in the display is very much a one time look deal, it doesn't have the history ability like the western systems and this pts it at a major disadvantage.

The Feniks and Tamir systems were decent against surface ships yet performed poorly against submarines.
Upgrades did happen however it still didn't solve the issues revolving ASW, overall the display screen you see is a soviet early form of MFD it was tossed out in the 1980s and in the 1990's after the foxtrots were gone they started using waterfall displays on the other boats.

You will find the same consoles in the Romeo Juliet and refitted into the Whiskey and Zulu classes among others.

Todays Russian boats use MFDs with waterfall and history displays which are about as equivalent as to what the US fields in their 688s, that in itself is a significant step upwards in their ASW capability with submarines.

I remember discovering the value of a history display in my Dangerous Waters days, and yet what we have in-game is much better than this screen, with its slow refresh, small diameter and wild jumps of the light bug, I guess it must have been difficult to distinguish overlapping contacts...



There is an article on Topwar (https://fr.topwar.ru/174019-rubikon-...a-mgk-400.html) that refers to paper recorders that allowed better detection than the screens, I suppose there would be a paper waterfall somewhere? But I never managed to find it on the photos.


The las rectangular display is very unclear to me. I think I've seen something similar in an active sonar station of a French museum ship but can't quite find it.
