Not really - off again at Sept. 27th '39 - mission: Patrol kvadrant BE31. Went through the Channel picked up an Ore Carrier and small merchant - used the deck gun. After that an ASW trawler (torp). Otherwise very little RN activity. Another Ore Carrier in the South-Western approach (torp). It is now Sept. 29th 20:24. Looking better now.

Lt. Schulz - U-99 - VIIB

U-99, Lt. Schulz, Oct. 3rd 1939 11:01 - Kvadrant BE3236 - 2nd mission.

Just finished patrolling BE31 - set course for Cherbourg to see if we could intercept some British troop transports to France. Received almost immediately report of a convoy approx. 100 km. South-East of us heading NNW. Went to intercept. Nice weather for hunting - if daylight:

Just sighted the lead destroyer - a C&D. Went to PD and turned towards him. And - some very nice echoes. Probably not many escorts so we shall try to take out the leader first with a TII. Now we can only wait.....

entering middle portion of BE sector,as traffic is high in this area perfoming first sound check.I can't believe our fortunes,we have a faint sound contact, bearing 330,moving slow, sounds heavy, sound moving from right to left, possible heading of SW towards S.America
turned to bearing 310 on a 20deg intercept course to attack port side of target
sound checks every 10mins
as E-Torps are the first load in the tubes we plan to attack at 500-1000m submerged.
23:50
gaining on target.seems to be heading more west, turned to put target bang on our bow, will follow him from astern.target may be a possible lone merchant heading for Halifax.
change of plan,as Russian shipping is our top priority to aid our troops in Stalingrad we will try to sink the target with the deck gun.if target is heavily defended then will probably abort the attack and report back to base, then proceed to our main objective.
9th Nov
day 4
00:01
still gaining on target after 3rd sound check
expect visual contact by 00:30 - 00:45

U-99 Obl.z.S Schulz Oct. 9th 1939 01:27 - 2nd mission.

Back in Wilhelmshafen. Generated in all 74.000 tons mostly from convoy in BE32. Had to sink all 3 escort vessels to get working peace. 4 LM's. Missed a large one on the way back through the Channel. F....d up the mission by trying to sneak up on an ASW trawler from behind in the dark to waste him with the deck gun as no torps left. Was detected and lost 6 artillery crew. Went below and got off the hook. Sneaked through the Dover Straits back home.

How does one get back with 6% HI....?

Man, when the BdU ask you to be more aggresive it doesnt mean suicide, at least not until 1943.
