Ouestion about RSRDC--

I've only ever played it until mid/late 1942, but I'm puzzled. Starting the game, there are convoys, i.e., more than one merchant escorted by DDs. There's the invasion of the Philippines and Guadalcanal, but it seems to be just unescorted single merchants throughout, if you can find them. It's kind of fun sending them to the bottom at no risk and it's good target practice, but it becomes redundant and I start to feel sorry for them. There are no "missions" either. Does this change as the game progresses past 42? Do single merchants finally wise up and start travelling in convoys? I don't know what "campaign layers" refers to. Maybe I'm missing something.

Just curious. Having a great game with TMO alone. I can actually be destroyed.

TMO+RSRD will present a lot of single ship encounters. the best path to success is to find the routes that are active and just patrol that area as they wander in and never wander out. :03:

traffic wanes in the later part of the war, with the shipping routes moving west until they hug the Chinese coast and the SoJ.

you will not see many convoys with this set of mods. when you do, jump on them. if they exist, they will follow the same lanes as the single ships do.

if you check out the TMO 2.5 forum, you will see that i posted my run-in with a 20 ship convoy. that was certainly a unique experience.

Thanks for the reply. What mods, if any, retain convoys, even small convoys? FotRS? Stock with GFO? I'm not a fan of all merchants being escorted by 5 DDs, but some should travel in convoys with one or two escorts, imo.

stock/gfo.

FOTRSU might have convoys. ask PB if FOTRSU has more convoy action than stock.

I am playing FotRSU right now and I encounter a good deal of armed merchants traveling in groups but without escorts and some small convoys. As far as I know (there are plenty of people way more knowledgeable than me around here) large convoys with strong escorts were historically quite rare until late in war when the Japanese had fewer merchants left and plenty of escorts.

The real challenge comes from the task forces.

I'm trying FOTRS now. Great mod. Both are great. There seem to be more convoys so far. Still early 42 though. I want to see how it progresses.

Another question that applies to all versions--does Very Hard/"Realistic" difficulty setting effect the AI, or does it just have to do with the start of campaign default settings which can be manually changed anyway, i.e., manual targeting, map contacts, etc.

the latter alternative: the career difficulty option will only affect the items that are listed in the gameplay options screen, while you are in port: manual targeting, map contacts, duds, cameras, et.al.

Thanks, KM.

Those settings do the "multiplier" stuff, and you'll see a "percentage" displayed on your screen somewhere on the settings page, about what percentage you are at. What those do, is if you sink a ship of say 1200 renown points, and your "realism" is set at 72% as an example, you would score 1200x0.75=900, so 900 renown points instead of the 1200 that is assigned to a ship.
