u-47 first Patrol
 
After leaving Kiel i was headed west to the english channels to reach my patrol grid in the atlantic at a speed of 6 knots.

shortly after entering the channel a English destroyer suddenly engaged me in the storm he hit my batteries and destroyed the right starboard elektrick engine forcing me with no power to hit the buttom of the channel and right after i got dept charged causing flooding in the 3 front compartmens with sonar radio and both periscopes destroyed i waited for the end. But! the destroyer disapeared and after 1 hour the flooding was under control and i was able to surface.
i quess it was just luck that the hull wasnt entirely destroyed and i was on shallow waters god bless me:)

atm im on my way to kiel once again for repairs probally the worst patrol ive ever made but also the most exiting and a great start of the campaign:salute:

Had dived after leaving the convoy but was picked up about an hour later by a contact which brought in three more. Over the next two hours I counted 47 depth charges. Suffered severe damage and major flooding. As I knew from the attack on the convoy it was raining and foggy with calm seas and it was 1945 hours I had a shot at escaping on the surface. I ordered the ballast to be blown and run at full speed. I surfaced with enough space from the attackers to get full top side and up to a top speed of just 11 knots before a corvette came at me from astern. U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - 3rd patrol - Oct. 1939 190636 - in the English Channel

Heading back home through the Channel now with one aft tube torp for self-defense left. We have seen a lot of small coastal vessels, most of them sunk using the deck gun. Also snuk up on an ASW trawler in the dark and finished him. Finally hit upon a large westbound convoy South of Exmouth escorted only by a J&K destroyer. Tried to nail him while he passed us in front of the convoy, he was saved by the zigzagging, did not discover the bubble track of the torpedo. We let him go and concentrated on the merchants. Then we experienced a multitude of torpedo failures, mostly when firing on magnetic fuze. Lost 2 "Medium Cargos" on that. The end result was two Intermediate Tankers and the J&K which returned to the convoy.

Just as he started hunting us we lost power on the electric engines and started slowly descending. However, the J&K missed us marginally on his first run-in. I switched a dedicated engineer officer to the engine room, that seemed to help. Ordered full reverse when he had passed behind us and lined him up for bow shot as he started to turn around in front of us. Gave him a nice full angle on impact almost exactly at 400 meters distance. He stopped still in the water, burning, but not sinking. After having wasted a couple of more torps on the merchants I gave him the decisive blow as we were leaving the field.

Hope we get safely home now.

Yes! Hard to believe, but those torpedo hits, under the bow and on the starboard side, are EXACTLY where my two magnetics detonated!:o

Last I saw though, mine was no where near in that much distress.:nope:

Torpedoed a small passenger/cargo ship. Two hits, and 50 shells from the 10.5cm. Attacked by aircraft, suffered engine damage. Target ship limped away.

Second patrol of Johann Mohr with the U-124. In cause of some Diesel engines troubles during the first patrol, the U-124 remained docked in Lorient for revisions until August 1941. Hited by some Spitfire balls in the Gibraltar area, the hull needed some reparations too.

For his second patrol, Mohr was assigned to patrol the grid CG87. The radio communications :

U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - 4th patrol - Nov. 1939 260000 - Wilhelmshafen

Ready to depart on Patrol 4 now. The last part of Patrol 3 was not without incidents. W were discovered by an MTB in daylight half way through the Channel, approaching us straight from the fore. Decided to stay above not to be caught up by any destroyers called in by the MTB. Gun crew started fire at 4.000 meters distance. At 1.000 meters there was finally a good hit. Lucky, as we only had 20 rounds when the skirmish started. I had forgot. In the meantime we had received some damage but no casualties. The Flak crew finished it off. Later in the day we were jumped by an ASW trawler suddenly approaching out of the mist on our starboard side. With only the spare aft torpedo left and all the deck gun ammo wasted I turned tail, heading AK straight north to get away from it. In this we succeeded as it did only 8 knots but only after having received some more damage.

As we approached the narrowest part of the Straits we went down and waited for the dark. We then crossed over on the surface without any incidents. HI when in Wilhelmshafen 64%.

We have now been given a mission area in North Atlantic and I decided to postpone my application for transfer to Type IX. We are departing shortly. Hopefully we find some fat convoys. Till now there has been too much small frey.

U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - 4th patrol - Dec. 1939 061902 - approaching the Orkney/Shetland gap homebound

Another disappointing patrol with much small frey. Finally bumped into a large convoy in the North-West Approaches but the largest ship was a medium cargo. Wasted two torps on it, the third did it. In the meantime the 2 Black Swan escorts made themselves felt. Both were sunk with fast G7's on magnetic fuze. Very short distance. The magnetic fuzes have a nasty habit of going off on long distances. Particularly in heavy seas.

The weather has been quite bad the last few days. Too bad since I planned to use up some deck gun ammo in the gap. We shall see how it turns out. I am not gong to sit here for very long to wait for better weather. Only have two aft torps left. Need to keep them for self-defense.

After a long break got back to playing SH3, was busy with SH5 but can't seem to really get into it even with mods added.

lol man I've had the VIIC a long time :cry: just got the IXB after my last mission now feel a bit better now. :D

Sad news about the U-124. During his third patrol, Johann Mohr and his crew were spotted by an American warship near Newport. Heavily deaphtcharged in shallow waters, the U-124 sank with all hands in January 1942.
After a unsucessfull patrol in south of Cape Vede (bad weather), Mohr received the order to ressuply at the Corrientes and to join a new patrol zone in the US east coast.
