Aces of the Deep crashes when sending contact report

Hello classic subsimmers,

I play an Aces of the Deep career in Dosbox 0.74; it is June 1941 and I stumbled into a convoy with northerly course on my return trip to St. Nazaire

This needs to be reported to BdU of course, but when the Contact Report option is pressed in the Radio menu the game sort of crashes and the intro is played again which can be skipped normally and I'm back in the main menu.

Is this a known issue to anyone and might a workaround be possible? Apart from not using the Contact report?

Now that I made it to June '41 I was hoping that BdU might finally order to shadow the convoy and form a Wolfpack...

What game version are you running?

Randomizer 09-07-22 09:22 AM

To expand a bit on Andreas86 post, the version may be important as I recall this happening regularly until the installation of the expansion pack with the Type XXI and the Med.

Randomizer is right. Here is an outtake from the version 1.2 patch readme. It was a bug, later fixed in the expansion pack:

Quote:

The following were included in the AoD Expansion Disk:

1) When saving a game, the number of deck gun rounds remaining will
be correctly saved.

2) A gauge has been added showing amount of compressed air and water
in the boat; this should make it more obvious to the player when the
cause is lost.

3) If the player is on the surface and no hostile units are in view,
player can time compress up to 512x, and if no hostile units are PRESENT
IN AREA upto over 4000x.

4) Torpedoes were vanishing from the torpedo loading screen; this was
fixed.

5) The music for "Ride of the Valkyres" and "It's a long way to
Tipperary" have been added.

6) Stop watch is fixed

The following have been fixed since the release of the Expansion disk:

7) Stern tubes were loading, even when 100% damaged.

8) Crash on reporting contact bug fixed.

Thanks for your answers.

The version information is (CTRL + V when in game):
Code:

Version 4.67 sim, 4.9 shell
This coincides with the expansion as far as I know? I also have the buoancy gauges and additional music tracks mentioned in the readme.

I've used the Contact report a lot in prior war patrols. Maybe the bug is not fixed for all situations...

That is strange indeed. But your version is not the latest. There is a 1.20 patch, that chould be installed on top of the game with expansion. It will bring the game up to 4.72 sim, 4.91 shell. As you can see below. You could try installing it, and see if it helps.

Thank you. The patch did the trick, the savegame even loads despite the warning in the readme that it might not while at sea.
Cheers!

Glad to hear so!

Cheers! :salute:
