What is up with the controls in SH4?

I recently tried to get into Silent hunter 4 as I was itching for some WWII action and I have fond memories of SH3 and wolfpack is a while away yet.

Is there a way to adjust the camera controls, or indeed any of the controls so that they aren't so damn awkward? I mean, hold control to turn your mouse into a strafe and height adjustment... what is that?!

Also, does anyone understand why the internal controls (the dials on the actual ship interior) show a glowing cursor but do very little when clicked most of the time (that's if the free look toggle doesn't get in the way) and other times have a mind of their own with sporadic orders being thrown around about going to flank then all stop then 1/3rd when I'm clicking on the rudder controls? clicking on the guys sitting at the wheels seems to do nothing more than emergency blow the ballasts... It just makes no sense.

You might ask, why I would want to try and control the sub that way. Fair point. A want for immersion? Too used to Dangerous waters depth? (no pun intended). It seems like it was designed at least in part to be interacted with in that way. Did that side of it fall by the way side during development?

Personally, I rarely use the mouse controls for other than camera pan and tilt. It just didn't feel natural for the 3d environment your in.
