Funny thing is, the Chief hasn't said a word. I think he's still in shock over it. These tommies ain't playing anymore. I have a suspicion BdU isn't telling us the whole story, as all of a sudden, they are flying at night, and are darn accurate with the DCs as well. The U-66 really resembles a pile of scrap metal now. I'm impressed with the crew, they managed to keep her together long enough to get home, the ones that made it that is. We are completely out of 20mm rounds, low on 37mm. All my flak gunners are dead, my engine/repair officer is dead, along with 6 crewmen. It seems the days of fighting aircraft may be coming to a close. I'll ask Erwin, I have a letter here from him. What the heck?! Just after dawn, a Sunderland landed a DC right on the tail of the U-66 as we crash dived. After a couple hours submerged, we surfaced and the Chief advised that we should head back to base, being that we were within 300km. So we did, ran at 20m until dark, surfaced and ran full out all the way home. So much for being more careful.:doh: I was not going to try to make it all the way to America and back with 65% hull integrity. While I was lying and waiting for the task force my sonar man detected a convoy closing. I set up an intercept course and while doing so we came across a single merchant, so why not sink it eh? Short story is we could not find the convoy afterward, but luck would have it another convoy came along, and I got into it, sinking both escorts and then shooting almost all internal torpedoes, then I surfaced and used the deck gun and flak gun to take out the rest. All were sunk (one ship did not get included on the list for some reason.) I scurried off and loaded all my externals, then came back to continue my patrol. Again the sonar man detected a convoy, and a intercept course was set. Made contact with the convoy, and got to close and they detected me. 2 were sunk while they were approaching. The other made me order a crash dive. Unfortunately I didn't realize how shallow we were, and we took a small amount of damage, because of the quick thinking of all the crew. Went to periscope depth, and waited till the escort was at 400 meters and on a good angle, and let off a stern tube, and got a hit on his stern. Only problem is I had let out most of the rest of my tubes when I was first detected, so I only had 2 sterns and one front left. I let out one of my sterns on a large cargo and got a dud, so I realigned myself and let out my other stern which hit him. I then surfaced and used the flak gun on him to try and bring him down, so I didn't have to waste my other tube. It went down and I took a shot at another ship and missed. I stuck around using the rest of my flak ammo on another ship, and took a bit of damage from some other ship in the convoy with a flak gun. After I ran out of ammo I decided to just periscope depth out of there. |

I am off the coast of Newfoundland yawning. Avoiding the death floating around St. Johns...What a cruel patrol square! Learned the importance of crashdiving from aircraft mid/late war. Repair officer saved our hides. I haven't sunk a thing.:wah: Well America jumped in a few months ago, Maybe I will raid New York Harbor and put a few deck gun shells into the statue of liberty. That will at least boost morale a bit.:) (they can't all be epic stories:D) |

If I use TI torpedoes set to slow or medium speed, I can get enough range to hit the big ships that are often (but not always) parked near the statue, get out, and race towards deep water before the sun is up. At various times, I've had battleships, two (24-25k ton) large troopships, and all sorts of juicy targets sit in front of that statue. The large 15k tons passenger ship that often exits the harbor, tend to be farther in, on the other side of the "city" area, all by itself. Early in the war vs the United States, it can often be easy to move around their harbor undetected, with only toothless tugboats as patrol ships. As for actually shelling the statue? It's probably a possibility at night, but you'd have to be quick. I'd be afraid to surface, given the number of deck cannons on the merchants there... Of course, it's easy to "cheat" and shell the statue just before the U.S. joins the war. |

Almost didn't make it. I wonder if that is how Bornmann felt before he bought it, just hoping to make it home. Lost 4 men trying to slap off the bees long enough to get under, and they still landed 3 solid hits to the U-154, then another later that nearly blew the conn off. 2 of 3 flak guns destroyed. I'm definitely having a snorkel fitted before we go out again. It seems BdU sees fit to send us to the Caribbean.
