New orders:Patrol grids AD59 - AD83

Are you using a mod that gives new patrol orders mid patrol? Or did you just make this up because your original patrol grid was quiet?

The reason I'm asking is, that if there is a mod allowing one to request a new patrol zone mid patrol, I'd very much like to try it.

Nice patrols, by the way. Especially patrol 3, with 112000 tons sunk. Can only dream of figures like that in a type VII, even more so with the torpedo failure mod.

U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - Sept. 1939 042137 - in the Southern approches to Scapa Flow

I have been out of business for some time and decided to start a new career from the start of the war, running XXI's out of Bergen was getting sort of boring. This time I am going to work in a more realistic (careful) manner than before - my reality percentage is, as it has always been, 74%.

The first station was to be in the vicinity of the Rockalls. Being given the U-47 (Saltzwedel flotilla) the "careful" went right out of the window, so to speak. We are now in the Southern Approaches to Scapa Flow. First, I decided just to go between Scotland and the Scapas on the way to our station. After all, war was not declared between England and Germany when we left Wilhelmshafen on the 1st. Having reached the Straits it was.

The area crawled with guard vessels and one A&B and V&W unknowingly came into our sights. As the weather deteriorated and night approached we backtracked out into the North Sea for reloading and battery charging.

We then went NorthWest again. As we approached the Straits we went below and proceeded with lowest speed - silent. Just before starting our final entry into the Scapa a J&K could just be observed in the periscope, crossing aft of us at 400 meters distance. That it was not detected earlier must be because of our inexperienced sonar operators. The officer of the watch acted immediately and a stern shot with a fast T1 hit it aft.

We are now proceeding into Scapa Flow.

U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - Sept. 1939 052136 - in the North Sea

Scapa was a disappointment. Only ships present were a destroyer and a troop ship at anchor. The destroyer sunk after one torpedo and the troop ship was also hit by one, the next one obviously exploding in a net barrier. We continued into the port, turned north of the troopship and gave it one from the other side. As it was I did not take the risk to stay and observe it sink but took a westerly course along the Northern shore, all the time submerged.

When turning south to get out of this dangerous place we suddenly hit on two anchored Tribals. Both were hit with T1's at magnetic. The first started to burn but had seeminly no intentions of sinking, the other one sunk only very gradually. I did not take my time to stay to have the sinkings verified as an Elco PT also materialized on the scene.

The departing from the Scapa was uneventful. We are now in the North Sea - headed for Wilhelmshafen. With one aft torp left for self-defense and a very inexperienced crew I shall be glad to get back in one piece.

The next patrol I shall be more careful. Or maybe it's Scapa again...:)

Thank you.

Yes there is such a mod: WB's Secondary Patrol Orders
It comes with 4 sub files for 4 different theatres : North Atlantik , Med , America and Afirca. It needs SH3 Commander to run properly.
One more thing: You must sink at least one ship for the mod to give you a new grid. You don't get any more renown for reching and patrolling your newly assigned grid.
The problem is that I don't remember where I found it.
Some help here please.

In this patrol I made up the order myself! Hehe :DL

Thank you. A search on the SH3 mods forum found it: WB's Mid-Patrol Radio Orders.

Unfortunately, this is not compatible with Realism fix V16A3 since it works by replacing the standard "Keep up the good work!" response (message 4198 in en_menu.txt) with a new message ordering the secondary patrol grid.

Realism fix V16A3 does not use the standard reply message, but uses new messages (4835-4862) instead, so the new patrol grid won't show.

I guess I'll just have to take a look at possible patrol grids in flotilla.cfg and roll a die to assign myself a new grid if needed (no shipping sighted in patrol zone for a week or so, for example).

Those who don't use the realism fixes should definitely take a look at this mod though. :)

U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - Sept. 1939 162240 - Hebrides Channel, Northern entrance

Not much rest, we were sent out again on Sept. 10th., patrol area AM23. Aimed to go between the Orkneys and the Shetlands to reach the Atlantic. There was a great temptation to try for Scapa flow again but our orders are explicit - stay away from enemy naval vessels if possible.

The strait between Shetland and the Orkneys proved to be very target-rich. Within a day six small and medium British merchants were encountered, unarmed and unlighted and not stopping for warning shots. All but one were sunk by the deck gun, ammunition is well used up. We are now heading down the Hebrides Channel. Maybe a tiny bit look into Loch Ewe. We have, after all, credited ourselves with some merchants....:)...

The crew is shaping up. Has got a couple of new very sharp sonar operators. Missed that on the first patrol.

Finally in the patrol area, lower right corner of AM23. On our way we peeped into Loch Ewe - too much guard activity on the outside. Proceeded to Stornoway - port totally empty. Further down the channel hit on a small merchant. Took the mid channel through the Hebrides, headed directly for the patrol station. Weather has been nice, a little too nice, all the way.

Presently heavy ovcst with some lightning, very moderate swell.

U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - 2nd patrol - Sept. 1939 231826 - North-Western Approaches

As no activity in the assigned patrol area we moved eastward to the North-Western Approaches. Plenty of civil activity there, only one destroyer detected in several days, no air activity. Very nice weather.

The harvest was six merchants in a short while. All artillery and 20 mm ammo expended. Only one torp left in the aft tube for self-defense. We are heading home.

U47 - Lt.z.S. Willi Hartmann - 3rd patrol - Oct. 1939 041215 - outside the Dutch coast

Not much rest - we were back in Wilhelmshafen on Sept. 23rd, sent out again on the evening of Oct. 3rd. Admittedly we had no damage when we returned. Assigned patrol square is BE31. I have decided to pass down the English Channel, crossing the Eastern minefields surfaced. In the dark, that is.

We are now approaching two Dutch guard ships. Shall be interesting to see their reaction as we are well inside Dutch waters.
