Nice one Jason, I recall one of the guides telling us the old girls hull was only a couple of mm thick in places when we visited in 08.

Breaking news: USS Texas springs bad leak, listing...

Uh-oh, this could be really bad. Sounds expensive to fix.

I visited the Texas in the mid eighties and it was having serious problems back then. I just cant imagine her staying open to the public much longer. :(

cj95 06-12-17 11:17 PM

She's well over 100 years old and at this point we are in a race against time and money.

The Last Dreadnought fights on.

Here is the "Insider" report sent out to the Volunteer staff:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
All,

The ship developed a leak yesterday and took a list to starboard, causing her to be closed to the public at about at about 2:30 PM.

Since then the original leak has been repaired. Water is being pumped out, but the ship's list is now at about 7.5 degrees. At least one other leak has developed and it is also being patched.

The ship's crew, a repair contractor, and an emergency response contractor are all on the scene and working on the problem. The staff are very busy dealing with this problem and have had little time to deal with inquiries about the leaks.

At this time there is nothing for us to do but wait until the repairs are complete. I know you are all concerned about these developments, but these crews have repaired leaks aboard the battleship before, and I expect that they will get these fixed as well.

I will pass along any information that Andy or Stephanie send to me. Please refrain making inquiries directly to ship's staff so they can concentrate on fixing the problem without distraction. I have let them know that many volunteers are ready if they find they need any additional help.

Several news outlets have published stories about this event along with photos and video. For those of you who are interested in seeing the images, I have seen stories from Channels 2, 13, and 26 so far.

Thanks for all you do,

Lee

If I find out any more inside details I'll pass them along.:salute:

Maybe they should embed her in concrete like Mikasa. Probably saves a bunch of money, and keeps the ship in better repair.

Although eventually they'll probably want to get rid of her since she's a sign of evil American Imperialism, and someone will find her offensive.

:haha: So true nowadays.
It is ok when it was a hundred years ago, the past is far away and we can warm ourselves in remembering those good old romantic days, when all was so much better. Even the future.

Seriously, museums and museum ships cost money. Not only the objects, but also people working and preserving them. Without research and getting the information to the public, museums are not worth much. Being able to visit is of course also a factor. Whenever money is tight, culture and museums are the first to suffer.
You always have to find a balance between financing bare needs, and luxury. Defence? Pensions? Medical treatment? Infrastructure? Museums? I would not consider museums and heritage as pure "luxury", but any victim in Syriah probably will. Also business will, unless there is no initial money to make with it.
Isn't there some union-wide heritage trust or something like that in the US?

Saddened me to learn of this on your FB post Jason, the old lady is certainly in need of much tlc and hopefully she will get exactly that.

*On a lighter note*

It is being reported that the leaks were discovered soon after the Texas was visited by this unsavoury looking bunch of people...

The FBI are asking for information from anyone who knows the identity and whereabouts of these two primary suspects...

The secret is simple - replacing the lower hull every so often.

cj95 06-13-17 06:11 AM

Well last volunteer meeting I went to...and its been a while....the plan was to put her on blocks or do the encasing in concrete thing.

The issue is she wont support her own weight out of the water anymore and there is even a risk of the big engines falling out though her bottom.:o

Most of the money earmarked for pulling her out of the water is being eaten up just making sure she doesn't crumple up when (and if) they actual do that.

Meanwhile....the damage continues.

August 06-13-17 07:04 AM

Concrete can be poured and set underwater. Maybe the solution is to build a coffer dam around her and slowly replace one with the other? That way she is never out of the "water" so to speak.

Catfish 06-13-17 07:18 AM

I think August has a good idea, if you exchange water with concrete the hull will be supported just like with the water. Problem would be the contact area between hull and concrete, because even in a dry area water from rain will creep in by capillary action, and make it rust. :hmmm:

I guess taking her out of the water will save money in the long run.

em2nought 06-13-17 08:13 AM

Those decks are a mess too. Texas has no prisoners that could holystone those decks? :D

em2nought 06-13-17 12:04 PM

I bet you could ask the Islamic convicts in our jails if they wanted to do some holystoning and you could have all the volunteers you could ask for. :03:

They were replacing the main deck last time I was there. They had it replaced back to the 1st rear turret from the bow, but it is a constant process.

Texas actually passed a bill in '93 to give something like 95% of the tax revenue from sporting events to the Parks system, but since then that money has constantly been taken from the parks and redistributed elsewhere.

The over $350 million for the 2017 fiscal year would be enough to be pay for the $100 million dollar budget of the park system, $50 million to completely fix the Texas, and still have $200 million left over for whatever needs funding that can be stolen for other projects it was never allocated for.

It's just far easier to do nothing, and continue business as usual for the politicians. I mean, when you can by pass every legitamit concern with: "Well, it's because those Millennials are ruining (Insert Talking Point). If they weren't out there (insert talking point that contradicts the first amendment) we wouldn't have these problems. The problem is they got (insert something given to Millennials by their Baby Boomer parents that they actually don't give two ****s about), and they want everything handed to them. If they hadn't gone to College for a worthless degree like (insert degree that demonstrates politician has literally no idea what he's talking about) and become a (doctor, engineer) then they'd be just fine."

I'm pretty sick and tired of these idiots and their party politics. Show me someone who can get stuff done, and has a history that proves they're congruent in their actions and ideology. This idea that a party never compromises with the other has got to go.

I'm pretty sure if you sat down the average American and explained to them that the Park system not only maintains our natural wonders, but also keeps pieces of history like the USS Texas in ship shape we could all agree it's worth funding.

The hippies and the historians all get what they want.

You guys need someone like Oliver Wendel Holmes to write you a stirring poem:

That's what it took to save the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) from a similar fate.

Quote:

Aye tear her tattered ensign down
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon's roar;—
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more.

Her deck, once red with heroes' blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o'er the flood,
And waves were white below,
No more shall feel the victor's tread,
Or know the conquered knee;—
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!

Oh, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;
Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail,
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!

Nippelspanner 06-13-17 06:24 PM

Now that's a beautiful poem!
