Chief Mac and the Contact -
Dave Stoops, US Navy
At the proper time, Mac yelled out, Up Periscope! and the quartermaster promptly threw the valves to bring the scope up. As it rose, Mac grabbed the handles smartly, wrapped his arms around the scope in true John Wayne fashion, and began his 360 rotation to look for other ships in the area. He did not get very far before he yelled, “Gotta contact! Mark this bearing! “ Of course, at this time, the whole control room came alive. We finally got a contact after weeks of inactivity. I had been sitting at the fire control panel, but got up and walked over to the plotting table, opened up the contact log book, made sure all the equipment was up and running and the input to the bearing indicator was selected to the scope. Mac continued to report his find, “Surface ship! Riga class warship! Estimated range....5000 yards! Estimated speed 10 knots!”

Blood & Honor - Gerard Cuomo
Fritz spins his cover to the rear and presses into the periscope sight. I advise him of my choice for identification. He checks my decision against what he is seeing and responds.
"Ja, Victory Ship...seven thousand tons."
I am about to take the scope back when he shouts.
"New contact sir...bearing three-three-zero...six-thousand meters."
I shove him out of the way and question what my eyes are seeing, a second merchant contact, much smaller, about seven or eight hundred meters astern of the Victory. It must have been hidden from sight during the zig-zag. This is the moment. I feel like the spear hunter, arm cocked back ready to throw. Breath held. Heart pounding faster and faster. Here it comes.

Sub Club Inter-Continental Meetings - Sharkstooth
The last surprise Neal sprang on the group at the 2004 Subsim Meeting was an exclusive, hands-on preview of Silent Hunter III. The game was still in development but Florin Boitor, the executive producer, sent Neal a beta copy to demo for the group. The game was great, even at that stage we knew it would be a smash hit. We were the first subsimmers to sink ships with SH3!
