Das Boot Sound Mod SH4

Well, I downloaded Operation Monsun the other day, and I was so tickled to be running a Type II u-boat in Silent Hunter 4 that I finally decided to stop whining about the American voices and do something about it. I know there are German voice packs out there, but I've loved the Das Boot Sound Mod ever since it was created for SH2. Some talented people did a lot of work and a lot of editing to create it, and I've always loved the movie voices. Which is why I converted it for SH3 way back when.

So, here is DBSM for SH4. It took a lot of juggling, because the speech files have been rewritten for the game. There is no Weapons Officer. His files have all been rewritten for the Chief Engineer/OOD; but the WeO files are still there. That was confusing. Also some files got cut short, but their functions were taken over by the new .wav files covering Surface, Dive, Battle Stations etc.

So, after a whole lot of work and testing, here it is:
[edit] It's now up on the SubSim downloads page:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=1083

We'll have it up at SubSim pretty soon, but for now FileFront is it.

I tested it as best I could, but if I missed anything let me know and I'll fix it right away.

Nice one Steve, I'll give the sounds a bit of a listen and let you know my opinions :yeah:

I like. Though the captain whispering orders when the boat is thundering on the surface on diesels is a bit odd:)

Aye nice work, I especially like the alarm sequence :DL

Unfortunately I came across a problem. It would seem the soundset somehow corrupts save files. Not sure yet, but I have not been able to load any of the games that were saved with this sound set enabled. The prior saves (the ones without the sound set, load fine. I will continue to find out if this is the case.

There is a possibility that the problem is caused by something other than the sound set, I certainly hope so, it sounds great.

I agree, but unfortunately that was the only "Kleine Fahrt Voraus" command given in the movie, so it's either live with it or swap out that one file.

That's one thing it never occured to me to check for. I'll run a series of tests myself when I get home tonight. Thanks for pointing it out.

Okay, I conducted some tests with the soundset. This was the procedure followed.

First off this is sh4, with the latest versions of RFB, RSDC and of OM.

1) Loaded un-corrupted game file.
2) advanced 12 game hours.
3) saved game
4) exited sh4
5) Re-started sh4, and loaded last saved game to verify save integrity.
6) exited sh4.
7) enabled sound set with JSGME
8) Re-started sh4, and loaded last save.
9) game loads up fine. Advance 12 game hours.
10) Save game under new title
11) execute crash dive, regular surface, regular dive, E surface, and fire one torpedo. This was to activate possible bad sound files.
12) Make new save.
13) exit sh4.
14) Re-start sh4, and load torpedo shot save.
15) success.
16) Load save prior to torpedo shot, without exiting sh4.
17) success.

With this it would seem the aforementioned problem was with something in the game itself that did not "surface" during this test run and not the sound set.

So Hopefully this series of tests have shown the integrity of the sound files, and I apologize if I sullied the worth of this awesome sound set.

help me out here guys, i dont play the german side so im new to this stuff, if i install this will german voices work for german side and english for US side or do you have to uninstall this to get the english voices back?

Sailor Steve 04-23-09 05:42 PM

Unfortunately that's a place where they made a step backwards for SH4. In SH3 you could select English or German voices. In SH4 you can't. You have to have a set of each, or use the stock voices for English and one of the German sound packs for German.

It's a pain, especially since it takes it almost 15 minutes to install DBSM each time (at least for me).

I'm hoping SH5 will be better.

I'm glad it turned out okay. I reloaded a saved game a couple of times with no problem, and was getting worried that I might be missing something important.

And you didn't sully anything. What if you had been right? I'd rather know than not.

Thanks again.:sunny:

so then it looks like the only way is to have a completely seperate install just for the german side?

im being very carefull with my GFO patch not to include things that could interfere with the german side like converting the snorkel commands over for sd radar mast operation because then the german side would have the message saying it was sd radar when you activated the snorkel. but how realistic is it to really be able to play both sides on one install?

Sailor Steve 04-24-09 01:58 PM

It would be nice, and could be done with the proper development, but SH4 doesn't do it at present. I'll end up with two installs anyway, just because GWX is so big and changes so much that GWX4 will almost certainly not be JSGME-friendly.

"Well, I think I'll play German today. GWX should take about half an hour to load up, so I'll just make some lunch while I'm waiting."
