3ds Max 7/8/9

Does anyone have an old copy of 3ds Max 7/8/9 I can use? I need it for detaching some OBJ elements.

PM sent

You can also use Blender for editing obj files. Or works it with 3ds Max better?

I tried blender, but it wouldn't import into Silent 3ditor correctly.

Jeff-Groves 06-04-22 01:13 PM

Somewhere on one of my many external SSD's I still have 3D Max 3.1!
I'm not about to dig through over 20 Terrabytes of stuff though.

What do you know! Found it in a folder for Iso's!
:haha:

I know what you mean, because I have the same problem with SH5 and TDW‘s GR2 editor. :k_confused:

Jeff-Groves 06-04-22 02:42 PM

TDW's program is very finicky about how an obj file is setup for import.
There's also the problem of files screwed up from early versions of his program.
:nope:

Xerxes asked me about helping do a tutorial for SH4.
I'm thinking a good one about how to get obj files properly ready for import with S3D would be a good one.
:hmmm:

So, Xerxes, send me the obj files you couldn't import from Blender so I can use those to do a tutorial.

Improper objs are also an issue with the GR2 importer by TDW and a lot of what applies to S3D, applies to TDW's importer.

The Blender proggy has settings for when a person imports obj files, and again when a person exports them. If not set correctly, they can make a seemingly good obj file impossible to work with in S3D. My COVID mush-brain cannot remember who it was that pointed me to correct settings... gap? vickers03? kapuhy? someonelse?... :hmmm: - Anyway, that is the main problem (usually) when working with Blender-ized files. :salute:

Jeff-Groves 06-06-22 02:33 PM

Yeah. In the early days of TDW's program for SH5, his exports to obj format were whacked!
I wrote a program to sort that problem and today?
I used it to correct a funky Blender obj file. It imported fine with TDW's program.

I see more then a few people downloading this little gem of a program!
:har:

OK, who knows how to deal with this on a Win10x64 machine with Windows Defender? I don't want to turn Defender off, but I want to allow Jeff's 7zip file through... This is like the fourth 7z archive I have run across that does this recently, and all since the last Windows "Update"... sigh

There used to be a button to press to allow a file through... not anymore :hmmm:

There is an executable file inside the archive, and Defender "sees" it as a trojan threat... :06:

When exporting the Object File from Blender you have to mark "Object Groups" on the right side.

Something else next the "Object Groupe" for exports or can be the exporte done with the other standard settings there:

And what abaout the import settings:

Let me explain why you may get a false positive by Virus scanners with my ObjSort program.

ObjSort does NOTHING but read the obj files which are just a text file,
then puts things in a standard format in another file which, again, is just a text file.

Microsoft Defender, as the prime example, will give a false positive and here is why!

MicroSucks has taken the stance that if a file is not Versigned? It's Bad! No exceptions from them. If they say it's bad? Screw you, it's bad JuJu.

Now to Verisign my files I'd have to fork over $70 bucks a year. Screw that unless someone else wants to pay!

I just add exceptions if my Virus scanner pops my own files bad.

Thanks for that Jeff, but my "freshly ~UPDATED~" Wind@$$ 10 install is nothing like what that web site has... sigh. I used to be able to press one button "Add Exception" in the dialog for this, but now the way to change it on my wunnerfull pos machine is to go into Settings, Update & Security, Windows Security (why is this not findable on a SEARCH!!!??), Virus & Threat Protection, which opens another windows... then Virus & Threat Protection Settings link "Manage Settings". Scroll down to Exclusions, click the link "Add or Remove Exclusions", answer "Yes" to the Windows 'Security' question... (sigh) - " (+) Add an exclusion". If the file is on the computer (mine would not allow me to download the file), then you can choose a specific file. Anything on the web is NOT touchable on my box. So, I used "File Type", and entered "7z" in the little dialog box, and click on "Add". After the download, be sure and extract the file, then click on that "7z" entry, and "Remove", if desired... Talk about a convoluted mess! This USED TO BE a one button process in the Security dialog when it flagged a file... sigh. I gotta go potty now, but I don't have any MSCEs nearby anymore to hold my hand while I go... I used to be qualified to do that. :hmmm:

In this case Jeff, I don't know as VeriSign would help either. It is an executable file inside a 7z file, and MS dunna wanna no 7-Zip proggy on your computer... it's "free" to use, and MS wants all that monetary flow they're not capturing going through them... look at Paint dot net now... just as many "updates" as Windbloze... Hopefully, Sweetscape stays out of their clutches.

Jeff-Groves 06-07-22 08:13 PM

I can split the file and zip it up.
That should by pass the MicroSuck BS.

jimimadrid 06-08-22 03:05 AM

Importing obj files i do not touched anything, only exporting it you should mark "object groups."

"Object groups" as additional mark next to the standard settings, or only "object groups" in the Grouping settings?
