Thanks, Herman! I'm still grabbing the database each time there's an update.:)

Herman 08-22-12 02:58 AM

I'm sorry for the ongoing flurry of releases. We try to keep them to a minimum so as not to be an inconvenience to players.

Thanks for your continuing support and interest. :yeah:

Blacklight 08-23-12 01:36 AM

Every time I turn around, there's a new one! :)

No worries about the flurry of releases. It shows that you guys love Harpoon and you can seriously never have enough missions to choose from.

I've tried my hand at mission creation, but due to the massive amount of platforms that have so many different stats and weapons and also due to the complexity of the mission editor, failed miserably both in practicality and in balance.

Thankfully I have you guys around to fill up the mission lists and I'm glad you're still doing it for ANW because I never updated from 3.9.4.0.
Maybe I will, someday. I would imagine that by now with the newer editions, I'm missing out on some interesting new stuff.

"There is NO such thing as a bad scenario" - H.Hum, 2003

You should share your scenario with everyone else, regardless of what you think about it. Even if you have problems programming orders for the AI forces, your scenario might still be playable in MP mode. As long as there is a human brain in control of the forces, lots of things are possible! Personally, I love trying any new scenario because of the surprise factor. Not knowing the exact enemy Order of Battle is just exhilirating since I have to prepare for anything and everything.

So, SHARE it/them!

About the only thing you are missing out is additional frustration from the new bugs. :)

Isn't a new Harpoon in the distant pipeline? Also, "Command" from Warfare Sims is looking really good. It looks like if AGSI doesn't step up to the plate, that's probably going to end up being "The New Harpoon".

I know that the "Harpoon 5" rules are actively being worked on for the miniatures game.

Herman 08-28-12 05:45 PM

Long ago, there was discussion about The Next Harpoon. However, given the ungodly mess that the current ANW/HUE versions are, I doubt that it will ever see the light of day. The best we could probably have hoped for was (another) warmed-over version of Harpoon being released as TNH.

Regardless, AGSI has their fate in their own hands. If they fix the games, folks might give them a second chance. So long as they pretend that the game works, potential customers will pretend to buy it. :rotfl2:

There are other games in the pipeline. Global Conflict Blue 2 is another contender also suffering from a painfully long gestation period.

Blacklight 08-29-12 11:26 PM

It's such a shame that the only game out there that really offers this level of detail that a lot of us wargamers crave, is this game that's becoming a buggy mess with each update. They're the only kid on the block for this.

I'm very impressed with Global Conflict Blue 2. I don't really care about having 3d models in it. i think that's going to limit it a little. I think I would much prefer a full world playing field with just a map and unit screen that looks like I would imagine a monitor in a war room would look like.

I tell you what. I actually REALLY LOVE the look of Harpoon3ANW. The vector looking screen, while outdated, REALLY looks like how I would imagine one of those monitors in the Pentagon war rooms would look. It's very 80's Wargames looking and I LOVE that. The only interface feature that I would love is to be able to drag the different maps and windows out of the play area and onto my desktop. I play on a laptop and it has a wide, but narrow screen. I have to keep the Harpoon window small to keep the aspect ratio right. It would be nice to be able to utilize my whole screen.

I wish more wargames would use vector graphics looking monitor screens instead of those new fangled modern 3d flashy graphic stuff.
:)

I think that your definition of 'a lot' is probably different from the one that means, "we'll make lots of money from them" quantity. :)

I totally agree. Naval War: Arctic Circle went the 3D route, too. I think it is one of their biggest sources of problems. They spent a bunch of time implementing it (badly) and it probably causes most of the slowdown/freeze problems.

The same is already happening for GCB2 and it hasn't even released. Most of the units in the databases lack of 3D images. It isn't causing crashes, but it probably slows down the number of units that get added. Of course, you can always resort to the generic ones.

That's because the real AEgis combat displays aboard the CVNs actually look like that.

With regards to playing Harpoon on your laptop, are you able to set the resolution that is 'just smaller' than the max window size of the screen? That is what I do on my desktop. By keeping it just below maximum, the proportions are maintained and you only lose a few centimetres at the top/bottom. The way to do this is to drag sliders in the ANW launcher to the max size and not just accept the default values.
