Question, btw: can you just keep a wild-born squirrel in the US, Canada?
I'm asking because in Germany you would slam into serious confrontation with the law (maximums of 2 years prison penalty, 50,000 Euros penalty), for our red European squirrels are under special protection over here, their population is - well, lets say their situation is not easy.

First of all THANK You for posting these feel good stories in my thread and sorry for not being active in posting myself.

Skybirds two latest post about Squirrels made me remember an article in a Danish newspaper.

(Only translating some part of it)

Can't find the article
It's about this grey Squirrel from northern part of USA who has become burden for our own Red coloured squirrel.
I found this part on wiki about this Squirrel eastern gray squirrel

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter..._red_squirrels

Let some people give an answer and then we return to posting feel good stories.

Markus

It makes me furious when humans use their claimed superiority to torement weaker, smaller creatures. Das ist das allerletzte.

This world would be a much better place if humans would be more willing and able to see that not only humans feature a soul, but the other creatures sharing this world and life with us, too. But when I see a wet market in Asia or an industrial slaughterhouse in the West or read the bible's message of that man should subjugate all world to his will, it makes me wanting to vomit.

And no, I am not a vegetarian.

That's OK Skybird for two reasons.

Your comment was related to the video provided by Jim.
Secondly
You put down in words, what all of us who have seen videos like this-are thinking.

This couple are squirrel rehabbers, I had some contact with them some time ago. They keep abandoned baby squirrels and rescued emergency cases, after the animals are nursed at home and later being placed in an aviary in a nearby commercially-run park-forest with wildlife for a period of time, and then get released upon suitability and individual status. From finding a newborn baby to releasing it if all went well is a job of around 13-17 weeks. In the first few eeks your life runs, all day and night, in 120 minute intervals, due to the need to constantly feed them and stimulate their digestion. Its a full time job, and its exhausting over the months if you are aloien and cannot take turns with somebody else. People finding a squirrel and thinking they can handle it themselves usually completely underestimate the effort needed. It makes a mess of all your time planning, job, and social life, everything. Day and night. And squirrels are extremely individualistic, all have individual characters, and the red ones we have in Europe are a very sensible species and are not the easiest to keep.

If I would have more space or another free room, and options for an aviary in a suitable forest reserve nearby for the endphase, I would be a rehabber myself, with love. I tick almost all the boxes for rehabbing squirrels: the knowledge, the will, the love, the free time, the stressfree and calm environment at home, the money. Just that I do not have the space. I am sad for that. You cannot keep squirrels in your appartement if you do not completely squirrel-proof if (they are rodents... and they pee everywhere). So I must leave it to care for the three wild ones we have in the garden, whom I know since they were teens, and who I care for and observe since spring 2020. Greet again my three "Nussketiere":Kira, Taro and Sari.
