Description

This is very basic modification of stock environment files that vastly decreases underwater visibility in Cold Waters.
It's aim is to increase amount of underwater "fog" to hide from player the objects further away thus decrease the situation awarness (SA)
Also it is serving as simple example of basic modding of Cold Waters.

The values this mod adjusts is the SubmergedFogDensity=XXX for every state of weather and time of day, from 0.015 (stock) to around 0.25-0.3 depending on time of day and sky conditions. I should point out that the new values are very close to the Atlantic Fleet ones, making underwater visibility similar in appearance for those familiar with previous Killerfish Games title.

Fantastic mod. Easily the most indispensable.

Have you figured out any way to deal with the shadow glitches at a certain distance?

It'd seem fog and shadows aren't quite on the same page, and you see the latter beyond what the former should be allowing.

This is simply great. Makes the game so much more realistic and immerse.

Nice work!

Captain Shadow - that's a side effect of ambient occlusion, present in a lot of games. As far as I'm aware there's no easy fix for it although I could be wrong.

yeah sorry I forgot about the comments

yes as rossmum said it is artifact of using ambient occlusion on meshes, the only way now is to turn it off in video settings

Thanks so much! This is one of these simple but super needed mods for a full immersion-style gameplay. I only wonder if color of the water should be -greener or not, but this is rather for KillerfishGames. Thanks again!

Does this also cut visibility out of water? I'd like to still have the default view distance for watching my harpoons or tomahawks hit ships/facilities.

There is a little problem with range of Ambient Occlusion btw. U can see shadow from A.Oc. from very long distance.

Water colour can be adjusted, I just left it at stock values, works for me that way, matter of personal preferences

This gives the feel of a real ocean. Not like the Vanilla ver. (Clear Pool Waters).

For those of you who are having problems with shadows being visible over large distances, turn off ambient occlusion in the video-options!

this mod breaks the game for me.plus it doesn't even work.
i only have the playable subs mod installed.
after about 30 minutes of playing with any sub, without the effects of this mod even working at all, fps drops to about 1 or 2, then completely freezes and i have to ctrl alt del and force close :/

How to make it work with ANY Cold Water patch :
As author said, the mod is changing SubmergedFogDensity=XXX value in a few files in game files.
So, it is not that complicated to do it yourself in any version of the game. here is how to proceed.

Instructions :
1 - locate the game folder that contain the files where this value is changed.
Folder name is "environnement", located in here:
...\STEAM\SteamApps\common\Cold Waters\ColdWaters_Data\StreamingAssets\default\

2 - Copy that folder into your override folder (where all mods are installed). You should have something like that now:
...\STEAM\SteamApps\common\Cold Waters\ColdWaters_Data\StreamingAssets\override\en vironment

3 - Ok, now in every file in "environnement" folder, locate the line that says :
SubmergedFogDensity=0.015

4 - Replace this value by 0.25 in every file. Now the line should say

SubmergedFogDensity=0.015

Pro Tip :

Best is to use an advanced text editor like notepad++ or sublime text, so you can replace all those lines in the 16 files in a single click. But its fine if you do it in notepad, you will just have to repeat the operation for each 16 files.

Thanks to the author to have made that mod i was REALLY looking forward to reduce the visibility in this great game, and you made it sir,

Best would be to have different values for every file to mimic day and night, and cloudy or not.
