Silent Hunter 4 (SH4) – Eliminate Crew Fatigue
This knowledge base is intended for those who play and enjoy Ubisoft Silent Hunter 4. It is not intended to generate revenue of any kind and further use of this document or the information contained within is not for sale, rent, lease or any other revenue-generating scheme. Those using this document tacitly agree to these terms.
This information is supplemental to Webster's No Crew Fatigue for V1.4 and V1.5. Either technique will work and in fact both could be implemented simultaneously.
Making changes
The remainder of this document describes the UPC files used in SH4. You may use a Microsoft simple text editing utility such as NOTEPAD to make these changes. Notepad is installed for free with every Microsoft OS since Win95. It is not recommended that you use any other text editor that may be more sophisticated than Notepad such as Wordpad or MS Word. This is due to the fact that the more sophisticated editors add special hidden characters for formatting and the like and may not save a text file as plain text, which is what SH4 is expecting.
Crew Fatigue
For those who have played the various Ubisoft submarine simulations, one factor of crew performance is their fatigue level. As the crew goes about its functions, they tire and are less effective due to fatigue. Some players enjoy that aspect of the game while others would choose not to have to contend with fatigue. It is with that in mind that this data is presented.
In SH4 crew fatigue is controlled by a set of coefficients (coef) for each compartment. Each compartment may have different values and the values all work the same way. The user may change the values in the submarine prior to the start of a career or they may be changed while in port during a career and between missions. Submarine files are stored in c:\Ubisoft\SH4\data\submarine\subname.UPC. The coef are entered for each Compartment and must be changed in each Compartment’s section to be effective. The coefs are as follows:
WatchStandingCoef=
MaintenanceCoef=
RepairsCoef=
ReloadingweaponCoef=
SleepCoef=

Each will be entered as a value less than zero (a percentage actually) that will add fatigue to the crew in each set of activities including their sleep cycle. All of the coef will be expressed as positive fatigue except for the SleepCoef which is expressed as a negative fatigue. The larger the coef the greater effective the activity will have on the crew’s fatigue. The larger the SleepCoef, the more fatigue will be resolved during their sleep cycle. For example, Here are the coefs from a Gato class Torpedo room:
WatchStandingCoef= 0.02
MaintenanceCoef= 0.019
RepairsCoef= 0.072
ReloadingweaponCoef= 0.072
SleepCoef= -0.12

And now from the same boat’s CommandRoom
WatchStandingCoef= 0.048
MaintenanceCoef= 0.0144
RepairsCoef= 0.072
ReloadingweaponCoef= 0.072
SleepCoef= -0.12

Notice that the WatchStandingCoef and MaintenanceCoef are different. That means that the Torpedo crew will tire more quickly than the Command crew and will need to sleep longer in order to recover completely.

If you wish to disable fatigue entirely, you can do this in a couple of different ways. Remember that the changes must be made in each compartment.
1. Alternative 1 - Increase the SleepCoef to a large negative number which will enable the crew to recover quickly from their fatigue.
2. Alternative 2 – Decrease the four (4) fatigue coefs to 0.0 thereby eliminating the effect of fatigue altogether.

Have fun and Good Hunting.
