As a former naval officer (not USN), I have long been a fan of games like Dangerous Waters (DW). Based on my experience – mostly AAW – I can assure you that the simulations in DW are of reasonably high fidelity. Notwithstanding my praise for DW, I have noticed that DW scenarios focus almost exclusively on live, operational environments despite the majority of the Navy's seatime being spent on exercise.
Each ship in the fleet has a life cycle leading it from dry-dock (i.e. refit) to deployment; this life cycle consists of sea trials, safe at sea training, combat and operations training, and mission specific exercises. This scenario is intended to represent a controlled exercise occurring along this life cycle. Specifically, the mission described herein lays out a highly simplified training program intended to hone the skills of individual sailors, combat teams and the ship as a whole. Being on exercise feels different than live operations – more artificial; this scenario tries to capture this essence even if in simplified form. Basically, I have created a DW scenario that attempts to realistically simulate the artificiality of naval exercises (no, the oxymoron is not lost upon me). Also, I should note that I have no submarine seatime to my credit; I would ask that any submariners out there detecting errors in my work be kind to this air defence guy who is ignorant of all things below the waterline.
