The Kaidai (海大型?) was a type of 1st class submarine operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) before and during World War II. The type name, was shortened to ''Navy Large Type Submarine (海軍式大型潜水艦 Kaigun-shiki Ōgata Sensuikan?). All Kaidai class submarines originally had a two digit boat name, from I-51 onwards. On 20 May 1942, all Kaidai submarines added a '1' to their name. For example, I-52 became I-152. Ships are listed by the three digit boat name if they had one, two digit if they were not granted one or left service before 20 May 1942.

Very nice mod for a playable Japanese submarine, IJN Kaidai 3B. I ran it with Windows 7, SH4 version 1.5 (this is the U-boat addition) and Trigger Maru Overhauled (TMO). I could not get Operation Monsoon (OM) to work with it, so I simply deleted OM for a while.
So, I had a playable IJN Kaidai 3B based in the Panang-Surabaya,-Singapore area in 1943! This class consisted of I-156, I-157, I-159, I-60, and I-63. The I-60 was sunk by HMS Jupiter (DD) on Jan 17, 1942. The remaining 3B subs were re-rated as training subs and laid up in April 1944.
Per the book "SUNK, the story of the Japanese submarine fleet 1941-1945" by Mochitsura Hashimoto, Japanese submarines didn't have air search radar to detect aircraft until early 1945. Hashimoto was a submarine commander throughout the war and pushed hard to have radar installed. To simulate not having air search radar I never upgraded my radar until 1945. Not having air search radar seems to be part of this mod because I never received a radar warning of aircraft nearby; I always received "Aircraft spotted", from the bridge lookouts, usually at medium range. To compensate for this I ran "decks awash/on the vents" at a depth of 36 feet during the hours of darkness and remained submerged during the day. Decks awash used more fuel but kept me alive.
I was surprised that bullets did so much damage to my sub but Hashimoto mentions he too was surprised at the amount of damage inflicted by bullets. Good research by Keltos for his mod!
To select the aft tubes (7 and 8) switch tubes using the W key. Or, use the selection knob of the attack map; it shows all the tubes (1-8). Or, go to the torpedo loadout and select the tube to fire.
All Allied ship traffic, including capital ships, seems to be correct and Axis surface raiders are encountered in the Indian Ocean.
Although the Kaidai 3B is rated to only 180', so far I have dove to 357'.
This is a very good campaign and I have really enjoyed it.
