Description
Factually history on the raid on Sydney Harbour 1942:

In the late afternoon of 31st of May 1942, three Japanese submarines I-22, I-24 and I-27, sitting about seven nautical miles out from Sydney Harbour, each carrying a midget Type 'A' submarine. The night before, I-24 had launched a small floatplane that flew over the harbour, its crew spotting an American heavy cruiser, the USS Chicago.
On the night of 31st May to 1st June 1942, three Ko-hyoteki class midget submarines, each with a two man crew, entered Sydney harbour , avoiding the partially constructed anti- submarine net and attempted to sink Allied warships. Two of the midget submarines from I-22 and I-27 were detected and attacked before they could successfully engage any allied vessels. The crews scuttled their boats and committed suicide.
The third submarine from I-24 attempted to torpedo the heavy cruiser USS Chicago, but instead sunk the converted ferry Hmas Kuttabul, killing 21 sailors. This midget submarines fate was unknown until 2006 when amateur scuba divers discovered the wreck off Sydneys northern beaches.
With respect, (knowing that the Japanese had a lot of Aussie prisoners of war) the Australian Government gave the crews from I-22 and I-27 a full military funeral and returned their ashes back to Wartime Japan.

This mission history using limitations of SHIII:

I have used the German Type II U-boat to represent the Japanese midget type 'A' submarine. The conning tower looks similar and for all purposes it works well in this mission.
For the mission brief,I have used the German commerce raider 'Thor' that was operating 'somewhere' in the Indian ocean, to intercept the radio transmission from Japan to the submarine I-24 lying off Sydney harbour.
For full realism, only use two torpedoes in the attack,as the Type 'A' only carried two.
Also send the Radio and Sonar men to the repair station. The Type 'A' had no underwater detection gear.
The Japanese submarines that carried the midgets are represented by Type VII boats. They will be in the area, 12 to 13klm off Sydney Harbour until 0600 hrs.
I have included a recon. photo of the harbour taken by the 'Glen' float plane launched by I-24 the night before to help you locate your target.
Also included is a map of the harbour as it was in June 1942.
Also included is a cut away diagram of the Type 'A' midget submarine.
The SHIII GWX harbour is a good representation of sydney harbour looked in 1942.

It took a lot of work to get the harbour defence ASW to search after the attack starts and not run aground too quickly in the tight harbour.
The ships that are in dock, are as close as I can get to the real types.
I hope you enjoy this twist on a Type II mission, and gain some historical insite on what it was like to be Lieutenant Ban onboard his midget submarine in 1942.

To install. Place the "Sydney Harbour 1942" mis. in the Program Files/ Ubisoft/ Silent Hunter III/ Data/ SingleMissions/ English/ folder.
I used Winzip to compress data. You will need a similar program to uncompress files.
