I followed Ducimus' recollection, modified the Submarines with 2.2 patch data, and dragged Flotillas from 2.2.
As he mentioned Career Start, I got that from 2.0.
Ducimus has not endorsed me, I'm just trying to help a burnt out old nice guy modder, Mr Ducimus.

This patch removes the bug that would give the player a TAMBOR class submarine as an upgrade to a new command from a GAR, GATO, or BALAO class boat.
The progression into new and better developed boats is, PORPOISE, SALMON, SARGO, TAMBOR, GAR, GATO, BALAO, and TENCH. A BALAO class can dive deeper than a SALMON or SARGO class for example.
TMO 2.5 has the progression into a newer command from a GATO class going back to a TAMBOR class sometimes when the player would expect a BALAO class.
There is nothing wrong with a TAMBOR class submarine and Ducimus made the TAMBOR class campaign in TMO 2.5. I would be happy to patrol in USS Tuna the entire War. If you want the T campaign, disable this patch. If you want the normal progression enable this patch on top of TMO 2.5.
This patch will make the game advance the career into newer submarine classes.
Rather than show every boat, I only expanded the TAMBOR & GAR classes to show every submarine in the table below.

Test fix, I followed Ducimus recollection, modified the Submarines with 2.2 patch data, and dragged Flotillas from 2.2.
As he mentioned Career Start, I got that from 2.0.
Hopefully it works.

Anyway in the interm, to fix this problem, you'll have to look at the submarine UPC files of the last version of TMO, in specific the upgradeclass variable. It should be near the top section of the file. Edit this to the last version of TMO,
and then take the careerstart.upc file,
and the flotilla.upc file as well.
They're located i belelive, data/upcdata/upccampaign or something like that.
Should be a straight drag and drop. This will pretty much be what the patch will look like, if you want to go ahead and fix the problem yourself. I will patch it, though i cannot say when. I have very little desire to look at the game, other then to save face from my collossoal screw up, and i don't have any of the previous files backed up on my new computer. So if i can't grab the old files, ill have to fix things the hard way.
The above is going by memory mind you, i'm slightly buzzed right now from captain morgan rum. Anyway, the only way to salvage the concept behind the terrible T campaign, is basically to disable and remove every freaking sub from play EXCEPT the one boat you want to play the entire war. Kinda sucks, but there it is.

Sorry to be a bit thick, but I've one question. I did experience this bug in my previous career, getting a tambor after starting with a gar, then got time warped back to mid 1942 following a refit to my Tautog, so I restarted my career in a porpoise, and now have a gar. I'm back in port right now, Nov of '42, and am going to go ahead and run this patch, but was wondering if I should still expect a balao once I finish 2 more patrols in the Grampus by spring of '43, or is it likely I will get a gato? thanks btw for providing this fix for the problem.
The patch should be enabled on top of - after installing - TMO 2.5 and prior to beginning a new career to guarantee success.
It may work on an existing career if you're lucky, as after enabling it, the game should only be able to give you the progression into newer classes. However there may be some info in a saved game file somewhere that is left over from the initial start of your career with TMO 2.5 without the patch.
If you had enabled the patch on a new career the progression of boats would have been into a SALMON/SARGO, TAMBOR, GAR, GATO, or BALAO from a PORPOISE.
Good luck and you can write any time - you're not thick... questions are good.
Thx you for this.I started with a Gar Class and then the game offered me a T-class, i refused and then i was offered a Balao in 1943.Will use it when i start a new career.
