In Russian it means shark, to the west it means the submarine that is most feared, the Russian nuclear power attack submarine of the Akula class is the most heavily armed submarine in the Russian arsenal, more than 17 have been built.
The akula class came to light in 1984, it was a follow on from the prolific Victor III class and also a stand in for the Sierra’s the soviet navy could not afford, made of high grade steel these submarines could dive to over 650 meters, and have top speeds of over 33 knots.
One of the most worrying things that was brought to light in the early days was how quiet they were, the victor III was quiet but this submarine was something else, later we would know the a KGB spy helped Russia catch and in this single class surpass the west.
The akula’s were quiet even quieter than the newest Los Angeles class submarines which made the akula’s very hard to find.
In this game Dangerous waters the Akula is modelled very well, I personally have been on board two akula’s one being of the original bars class or first type, and the second being of the improved type, you can really notice the difference between all of them, and they are modelled excellently in game even down to the colours.
