View Full Version : What's in a name?

Abraham
10-10-05, 07:45 PM
O.K. I'm Abraham, because that's my Chistian name - in the dubbel sense of the word, actually.
Neal Stevens = Neal Stevens, that's clear, the Leader of the Pack.
John C. Channing and Bill Nichols also seem to be existing personalities, but who are you?

Drebbel, what made you pick that nick? Kapitain, why not Captain? Oombongo you say you're not from Africa, but you certainly have to explain something! XabbaRus, how Russian are you? TLAM Strike, you really sound threatening! Sixpack, do you really drink six cans at once? Skybird, well I know that you love Falcon flight si... ooops, sorry...
The Avon Lady only explains on her webside why she's not the Avon lady...
Is Damo1977 really 28 years old? Joea sounds Spanish to me, but I doubt if Hitman - who lives in Spain - is a hired killer... Isn't Iceman living somewhere in the desert instead of the North Pole, Arizona or what?
Is Rockstar really a rockstar whose CD's I can buy?
Shouldn't names like Jace11 and Gizzmoe by forbidden by law?
Don't you see a future, Torpedo Fodder?
And Pigfish, what the hack did you have in mind?
Not to mention all those names that don't pop up at 02:36 am...

To make a long story short, this thread is not about 'Who are you?' but about 'Why are you named the way you are?'

snowsub

Mine:

Snowsub basically I've got Snow as part of my forum names on any forum I've partaken in. Sub for obvious reasons on this type of Site/Forum.

Snow part comes from Mr Snow, a character in the Amtrak Wars series of books. But he's probably more itelligent than i am lol.
You could also say it's irony considering where I live.

Snowsub: that was certainly one name I was wondering about. The avatar looked like Popeye but the name reminded me of Santa Claus...

TLAM Strike
10-10-05, 08:41 PM
TLAM Strike, you really sound threatening! Now that you mention it I do have an intimidating demeanor at times...

Actually I picked that name after about 15 seconds of thinking for name that sounded submarine like. :ping:

Rockstar as in USS Liberty.

My Christian name David, family name is Sorensen.

10-10-05, 09:44 PM
1916 is the year that my dearest Football/soccer club Legia Warszawa was founded, and is the most associated word/number with the club. I didn't have much inspiration for a good name around me when I chose it.

10-10-05, 11:01 PM
I have used gdogg or gdogghenrikson ever since some one gave me the nickname gdogg my real name is Gabe so I guess the are wannabe ganster so I would hear "what up dogg" and it turned into what up gdogg (no im not related to Snoop dogg)

Pigfish
10-10-05, 11:23 PM
And Pigfish, what the hack did you have in mind?
To make a long story short, this thread is not about 'Who are you?' but about 'Why are you named the way you are?'

When I first joined the Subsim forums I used my real name. As time went on and I realized that I might stick around here I was told that I shouldn't use my real name. So I tried to change it in profile. Over and over and over. I did not realize that I would need a moderators help to change my user name. So in my efforts I tried many name changes but none worked. Had you been able to simply change user name with profile I would probably be known now as 'Seaslug'. :yep: :-j

Eventually, with help from the forum members, I realized I had to contact Neal to make a change and Pigfish sounded humorous enough and was the I was trying to use at the time, among others.

As time went on and going on the apparent humor of my user name I thought it cute enough to give myself a pig avatar, as a play on my user name.

I'm a happy pig guys, nothing strange or weird about it, it just happened...kinda...

The Avon Lady
10-10-05, 11:28 PM
The Avon Lady only explains on her webside why she's not the Avon lady...
My first experience in multiplayer was with Novalogic's original Delta Force (1) game.

I wanted a name that would be ammusing in the game's "kill" messages. I found "Sergeant Slaughter/Rambo/Mean Street Kid/Crusher was shot dead by The Avon Lady" to be to my liking. :D

What got me upset was the day I was killed by a Mary Kay girl. :dead:

Kapitan
10-11-05, 01:40 AM
Kapitain, why not Captain

why i plainly just wanted to be diffrent at the time i signed up i was playing sub command and i heard the chief of the watch shout "Kapitain aproaching maximum depth" so i chose that name.

i spose just wanted to be diffrent and i am :D im diffrent cause i cant spell my own name some times (still gives me trouble when i log in even to this day)

Abraham

@ The Avon Lady:
Nova Logic = Avon Lady, for people that are used to read words from the right to the left but figures from the left to the right, the name makes perfect sense.
:D
And always listen to Mother Mary! She speaks words of wisdom, let it be...

@ Pigfish:
I really thought your name referred to Pigboats, the nickname of US Submarines at the start of WWII...

@ Kapitain:
Kapitain, why not Captainhy i plainly just wanted to be diffrent at the time i signed up i was playing sub command and i heard the chief of the watch shout "Kapitain aproaching maximum depth" so i chose that name.

I think you're confused. Let me explain: Mary Kay (http://www.marykay.com/home.aspx).

Iceman
10-11-05, 02:47 AM
Actually I go by two nicknames the other I'm sure you'll love too..."CD"...stands for Creeping Death...and Iceman...both come from my style of game play in which I am cold and to the point about getting the dirty job of destroying my opponents done. Anyone who has played online with me is always glad to have me on thier side. :lurk:

Konovalov
10-11-05, 03:57 AM
I borrowed my name from the Alfa class submarine that featured in the film The Hunt for Red October because I was addicted to Sub Command and loved driving my Soviet SSN.

Gizzmoe
10-11-05, 04:11 AM
Well, where does "Gizzmoe" come from... I saw a post on 23th of March, knew the answer to his problem, and I gave me about a minute or two to find an alias that´s not too common and that was also still available on gmx.de (free email provider). I was quite drunk and I thought "Gizzmoe" sounds and looks good. Then I signed up. That´s the whole story... :)

jumpy
10-11-05, 04:46 AM
jumpy - nickname I was called at school, kind of stuck.

Type941
10-11-05, 05:03 AM
Type941 - it's a russian submarine, the typhoon, obviosly. seen the Red October long time ago, and to me it stands out as something that symbolized the whole nuke sub era of cold war. so when registering on a Submarine website, Typhoon was the first thing that came to mind. And since "typhoon' didn't seem available at the time of registration, I had to go for the Type941. .... Don't cofuse me with Akula, as someone once had an unfortunate mistake.

Sixpack
10-11-05, 05:08 AM
Simple: 'Sixpack' was the dumbest nick I could think of at the time. It actually goes back to the year 2000. However, some of you folks really take the cake.

FYI: Some of my other marginally more clever nicks on the web -in racing sims fora- are:

Meanmachine
Victorious
Turbo lover

PS I havent played a sub sim in over 2 months now. I'm getting my kicks with 1000 HP instead with a minimum of electronic driver aids. Suddenly U-Booting seems ...kind of silly (...). Sorry, just a phase I'm going through, I guess. I figure I should load up DAS BOOT UNCUT again for inspiration. Catch y'all later

My christian name is Sebastian and Polak simply means Pole in polish.
I chose that name because I'm proud of being Polish ;)

joea
10-11-05, 10:05 AM
Well for me it's really simple and boring. Comes from my real (middle, my first name is more "Greek" less "Canadian") name and the fact there were 4 guys named Joe in my high-school class so we were distinguished "Joe A., Joe N." etc. I kept it up on a lot of forums but could come up with a better name ...

Dowly
10-11-05, 10:59 AM
I have two nicks I use.

Dowly: It just came to my head, years ago when I was playing DoD (Day of Defeat), so I just kept it.

And sometimes I use the nick Maggot86 when playing online games.
Maggot = I`m a huge fan of a band called Slipknot (the band calls their fans as maggots)
86 = well, I was born on 12th of January 1986

Oh, there´s one more I used ~4 years ago, when I first tried Counter-Strike (fricking stupid game!!!) and I sucked at it, so I named myself as UltimateToilet. :)

Good answer

Oberon
10-11-05, 01:51 PM
Oberon - Class type of the first (and currently only) submarine I've been on

Also known as:

Thunderchild - After the torpedo ram of the same name in HG Well's War of the Worlds :D

Electricfox - A nickname for the F-111 I picked up in a book called 'Shadow Hunters' :D

Err...don't think I use any other usernames

Bort
10-11-05, 10:22 PM
Bort was a name that was in a "Simpsons" episode when the family goes to the itchy and scratchy amusement park and when Bart is trying to find a license plate with his name on it and he can't find one, he only finds ones that say "Bort". *[FOX]* was just the name of a clan for CoD UO. Right now I'm thinking of switching to either FOX, or Bort. Not sure though... :hmm:

Terrax
10-13-05, 07:04 AM
@ Dowly, my Son is a huge Sliknot fan also. He plays guitar and I play bass, and we jam to some Slipknot songs quite a bit (Duality & Before I Forget being our favorites).

As for the name Terrax, it was the name of one of my favorite comic book character from years ago. I've been using as my name in computer games since the early 90's, and it carried over the the net.

OneShot
10-15-05, 02:32 PM
OneShot dates back to 2001 when I got my Internet Flatrate and started to play online. I joined up with the USVN at the time and had to choose a Nick/Callsign. Unfortunatly Maverick (my favourite Nick till then) was already given and at 0200 that was the second thing that came to mind while thinking bout Rogue Spear. That stuck and I havent changed the Nick ever since. Sometimes I add 1978 or TC (most lately) but OneShot (or short OS) stays ....

Kresge
10-15-05, 03:07 PM
Kresge, as in Sebastian S. Kresge, founder of Kmart (US chain store well before the Walmart days).

Back when I discovered Subsim.com I was working in the library at my university and every day I would see the portrait of this smug, pudgy guy staring at me from across the hall. Then I thought SS Kresge sounded like a great name for a ship and it ended up as my ID.
Strange but true....

10-16-05, 05:47 AM
* Bort]Bort was a name that was in a "Simpsons" episode and he is Bart's evil twin in Tree House of Horror 7 I believe. And *[FOX]* was just the name of a clan for CoD UO. Right now I'm thinking of switching to either FOX, or Bort. Not sure though... :hmm:

I'm going to sound like a right Simpsons anorak, so here goes. Bart's evil twin in the tree house of horrors episode was called Hugo. Bort is from an episode where the Simpsons visits a theme park and the robots go on a rampage (ala the WestWorld film, I think). Bart is looking for a licence plate with his name on it but can only find loads of Bort licence plates, he wonders why there's Bort licence plate and several people in the gift shop are called Bort.
/Anorak mode off :know:
My DeerHunterUK name started after a visit to the States where I bought 1 of the DeerHunter games. I enjoyed the game and signed on the official forums with that name. I also can be seen under the "Dr Cheeks" (Simpsons) and "Moggy" (character from my favourite book "Piece of Cake") names.

caspofungin -- when i signed up for this forum and had to choose a nick, i was in a singularly unimaginative mood and couldn't come up with anything. started looking on my desk, saw a pen froma drug company -- caspofungin, an antifungal agent. Thought it would do in a pinch.

Back when i used to play Call of Duty and Day of Defeat my nick was BulletMagnet cause I ate so much lead.

Dead Mans Hand
10-19-05, 08:08 PM
I like poker, I also like unfair advantages. I find the analogy of trying to cheat the devil's game a fitting reference to warfare, I especially find it a very snug fit for commanding a U-Boat as well. C'mon, you all know you have that same evil laugh when you find a convoy with a lone escort that happens to be sailing straight for you anyways!!!!!!!!!! :stare: ... or maybe after many hours of hunting I just get exciteable...

*Eh, side note the Dead Man's Hand contains five aces, most notabely with two Aces of Spades - the most (for lack of a better term) valuable card in poker, it represents death. If I could change my icon, it'd be the Dead Man's Hand - on my conning tower.

To sort of expand on this thread, how many people know what their numbers represent? I recently chose a bombed out VII-C, I changed this when researching U-238 (A previous choice of mine) and found out that it had gone down with all hands lost. How many people know the history of prefered #'s?

Dead Man's Hand
Legend holds that Wild Bill Hickok was shot to death during a poker game in Deadwood, South Dakota, and that the hand he held was two pair, black aces and black eights. On that most people agree. The fifth card is not known for certain.

This is the only Dead Man's hand that I have ever heard of..
in what context does the 5 aces hand appear?

Bellman
10-19-05, 10:50 PM
Guess he will keep that 'up his sleeve ?'

OT - Bellman :-

''The bell invites me.
Hear it not, Duncan; for its a knell
That summons thee to heaven or to hell.''

''It was the owl that shrieked, the fatal bellman,
Which gives the stern'st good-night.'' Macbeth.

''And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.'' John Donne.

It represents a portent of doom, a reminder of your mortality.
If you hear it ringing you are a dead man.

I usualy manage a chime or two as my torps close in for the kill. :ping:
