First you have to go to the top toolbar, there is a hand there to more around the map. Make sure that is NOT selected.
Now to make you group you first need to select a ship to be the "leader".
Go to one ship in your group, LEFT click to select it, the ship will change color when it is selected. NOW RIGHT click and choose "Create Group from Unit" . Give the group a name. You will see an extra line around that ship.

Now Left click on another ship to select it. Right Click and choose "Join Group". Select the group name from the list if you have more than one group. The ship will connect to the "Leader" with a line.

Repeat for all ships in the group.

Once you have the group all connected you can Select the "Leader" then right click and select "Arrange group". You can then set number of columns and distance from each other. The 300 meters that is in the box is too close, change to about 800. (It depends on the ships and speed etc, you will learn as you go)
Now your Destroyers will be set as escorts and the other ships will be in nice neat rows. You can still move each ship separately if you don't like the way they were set. One reason for doing the "Arrange Group" is that depending on how far you are zoomed in or out on the map, the ships may be a LOT farther apart then you think they are. This gets them close together.
