1. Uninstall SH4, then reinstall SH4. Do not play the game until applying the v1.4 patch.
2. Run v1.4 patch installation file.
3. Follow the instructions.
v1.4 Changes:
Rendering distance increased to 20km, with appropriate improvement for visual sensors capabilities
Dynamic loading of game units has been implemented, considerably improving loading times
Improvements to Water rendering
Improvements for enemy ships detection of steam torpedoes
Damage taken by hulls submarine is shown in the damage interface
Entries in Captain�s Log are now limited for better performance
Screenshot names now contain the date they were taken on
End patrol ports are now displayed on the map
Objectives on the navigation now change color when completed
Fixes:
Destroyer/Submarine collisions always leading to the destroyer being sunk
Fix the periscope animation problem
Save & Load issues with the submarine crew
Magnetic/Contact Detonator switch now working properly
Improper display of the TBT interface for widescreen resolutions
Loss of torpedo aiming track when crossing the International Date Line

Coming back....Computer Not Allowing me to execute install of 1.4 update into win 10 this November 2021. Asking for SPECIAL administrator permission. I am not even shur if I can start in safe mode and install from there ... I will be looking for trigger maru to run with 1.3 and I want rising sun mod also.
some old mods I have on cd might still work I hope; like Kim's map stuff and the green hud lights. A couple radio apps help the game too..
If anyone knows work around to install 1.4 in win 10 post it please/
OK as I implied, I have been playing this great game since about 2007; but have not been back here for several years. Originally, I purchased a bonus edition CD from Ubisoft. It worked great on my windows vista laptop and I still have it in the closet. I never upgraded to the Uboat on that computer and many of the present mods will not work because of that but I cranked it up the other day ..... the graphics are not so good compared to what I have on this win 10 laptop gaming computer although it was new in 2011. SH4 worked on this win 10 that was originally a win 8 but some files were missing causing game to crash and other files are corrupt after 11 years of windows updates and mod program work so I am starting over...
I could not execute the 1.4 patch as the computer was asking for special administrator permissions... RESOLVED: I made a notebook text file in the same folder as the downloaded 1.4, and saved it as a BAT file
the text is as follows"set _COMPAT_LAYER=RunAsInvoker
Start silent_hunter_4_1.4.exe"
I then restarted the computer in SAFE mode and clicked on the BAT file which I just made, which executed the 1.4 file and did not ask for any permissions. Someone might try to use SAFE mode without the BAT file and see what happens
Program loaded and opened looks normal
Might add that I have two hard drives a SSD for the system that is almost full (thanks WIN 10) and a conventional hard drive that I put all programs on
Now I can install mod installer and get some good stuff going.
I recall there is something about SH4 not seeing all my RAM. I see I had a patch specific to SH4 for this but I think there is something out now that addresses this issue for all old games.
